Decided to give a write-up for tonight's game, take it how you want to take it. GLTA.
** Michigan's offense has been trending up last three regular season games versus quality defenses (Illinois, Nebraska ?, and Ohio St), although Illinois lost field position b/c their offense is inept, Nebraska lost field position b/c their O is one-dimensional, and Ohio St. had injuries to key defensive personnel. Same argument could have been made for VT as their offense was trending upward until they hit a major snag, yet again versus Clemson, scoring only 10 points in their second matchup, after managing only 3 points in their first game vs the Tigers.
Robinson is a much better QB at this stage than his counterpart Thomas. He's truly gifted but doesn't turn it on all the time, although he should get his tonight. It's also well-documented that VT has had problems with similar style QBs such as Tajh Boyd of Clemson. If Robinson limits his greedy picks in opponent's end-zones and runs his zone-read spread option offense, Michigan should crank out close to 30 points. On defense, Michigan employs pro style blitz packages under DC Mattison and will load the box in an effort to control explosive RB David Wilson's and Thomas' rushing attack. Both Wolverine corners will be on an island most of the game with marginal safety support, or blitzing themselves, so we'll see how good Thomas is at slinging the rock. VT's kicking game is dicey as well, with no reliable FG place kicker available, resulting in lots of high-risk dramatic 4th down attempts. No need to stress the importance of field goals in bowl games after Fiesta Bowl last night.
Also well-documented but important: Beamer is a great coach, with 18 straight bowl games since 1993, but is 8-10 in those bowls. Lots of pressure. ***
Thanks WBA.
