South Carolina at Vanderbilt
My first thought on this one is that Vandy is not NC State! Now, despite the 34-0 final, I want to remind you that going into the 4th quarter last week SC held a 13-0 lead after producing a TD and a FG in the 3rd quarter. Now I am fully aware that Beecher played awful tossing 4 INTs, but let's not get too carried away about Smelley. Afterall, Coach Spurrier thought enough og Beecher to name him the starter ahead of Smelley. Smelley went 5-5 for 92 yds and 2 TDs, but again I go back to the fact that this week he is not facing NC State. Davis looked solid gaining 101 yards on the ground, but this week he is not playing NC State. The SC defense certainly came to play last week and NC State had little chance to get anything going. Again however, when your offense gives up 4 turnovers and 5 sacks it is going to make the defense look superb. I guess you get my point....Vandy is not NC State.
Vandy also threw up 34 last week in an impressive outing against Miami-OH. QB Nickson was his usual phenom self as he rushed for 166 yards and 2 TDs and was 9-16 for 91 yards and a TD through the air. The defense gave up 340 yards and 13 points but they only allowed 96 yards on the ground and did create 3 interceptions.
In my opinion, South Carolina wins this game. However, they are not playing an overmatched NC State team this week. They are going into their SEC opener against a very good Vandy team. A Vandy team that beat them last year in a tight, low scoring 17-6 affair. SEC openers on the road are never easy, and are especially dicey when you are the visiting team and are laying 10 against a quality opponent. I beleive Vandy is a very live dawg in this one tonight especially when I look at the fact that South Carolina is a mere 1-5 ATS in their last 6 as a double digit road favorite.
