WOW. He had that big offer teased his way with Philly before Amaro apparently didn't have permission to give him a contract...and now he's settling for a 1 year deal. 

Good move regardless. Madson and Marshall make a nice 8th-9th inning combo.

I'd rather have madson than papelbum too. Marshall and Madson not too shabby. I personally think they should use Chapman to close but he'll be a starter. Just my opinion

The plan is to use Madson this year and if Aroldis tanks as a SP, put him to close in 2013. If Madson and both Aroldis are doing good midyear, I'd expect Madson to resign.

not a bad plan capone but they might trade votto after the season if they don't get to the playoffs. I read where Marshall would be the closer. In my opinion he doesn't throw hard enough to be a consistent closer. Again that's my opinion

They're not going to trade Votto. The plan is to go all out in 2012 (dumping Wood, Alonso, Volquez and acquiring Latos, Marshall, Madson, still looking to add a platoon LF with Heisey). Marshall is not going to close with Madson now signed. If the young Reds (particularly Heisey, Stubbs, Fransisco, Cozart) mature this year, this team is a well-oiled machine and the World Series is a viable option.

Trade Votto?! Why would they do that?? He's great. Trade Phillips, Bruce or Stubbs before Votto. It's harder to replace a guy who can do it all than a .350 or below OBP guy. I would be stunned if Votto was dealt away.

As far as Madson goes it's a good gamble. A one year deal forces him to pitch for a contract. If he pitches below expectations than deal him at the deadline to a contender for a guy with an expiring contract. I like the move.

They might not be able to afford votto.he's got 2 years left. Who's to say they will pay votto 6years and 140 million 7 years 175 million something in that range again that's my opinion. The reds got burned in the griffey deal. Votto might pay for griffey's sins. Again tophat and all its my opinion

I hear ya. MLB will be down to 12-14 teams if the contracts continue to escalate, it's ridiculous. Why does Oakland even have a team anymore? They can't compete. Kansas City too. KC should trade Hosmer now. Why bother hanging on to kid. He's a stud destined to make big money and there is no way they can pay him.

I love baseball but the money is totally out of control.

   Just give me a year or two to enjoy the Royals having the opportunity to be good............then reality can hit me square in the face......but for the love of God, don't do it to me now

Lol!! I was being sarcastic. KC has Hosmer for 5 more years. BUT!!! Hosmer will be loving that short porch in the bronx in 2017. In 2017 Tex becomes a free agent and so does Hosmer. Out the old and in with new. It's amazing how things work out for the Bronx Bombers.   The first $300 million dollar contract?? Hmmmm.
