I'll be the first to admit that I've been anticipating a drop off by the Pittsburgh Pirates. However, they've maintained their position in the National League Central Division and remain in contention for the playoffs.
Entering play of Monday (August 1st, 2011), they are 4.5 game behind the Milwaukee Brewers. The Saint Louis Cardinals are sandwiched between them and are 2.5 games ahead of the Pirates. The Reds, Cubs, and Astros are all out of contention (yes, the Reds are done).
The Pirates seem very serious this year to compete. Pittsburgh management even made deadline deals to improve their team rather than sell them off like they normally do in order to turn a profit. It still baffles me that Pittsburgh was one of the most profitable teams in the Majors during their years of futility.
The Milwaukee Brewers enter a set versus the Saint Louis Cardinals which could create room for the Pirates to gain ground. As they say though, you just need to worry about taking care of your own business in order to reach your desired goal.
That's where the next week comes into play. Not only do the Pirates play the next seven games in Pittsburgh, but they will do so against the Chicago Cubs (4-game series) and the San Diego Padres (3-game series).
