You say "Play of the Century?" and I reply HELL YES... Simple. I know the doubters say Pittsburg is above .500 at home, correct! But after you give away your entire roster its very tough to win games. Lannan's last start against the Pirates was a gem, 1 run in 7 innings. Not to mention he just tossed a complete game shut-out against NYM, and 1 run over 8 innings against San Diego. Yes they are two of the weaker teams in the league but what is Pittsburg? The Pirates have lost 5 in a row and are the laughing stock of the league right now. With only ONE starter from their opening day 2008 roster still on the team (Ryan Doumit) this team doesnt have an identity. I can ride down the road to Chapel Hill and get the Tar Heels to whip their ass.... Olendinger hasnt worked over 6 innings in his July starts with the excepting of Ariz... Guys this team is in bad shape and Lannan has proven that he doesnt give up much runs, esp. to a team that doesnt have any feared or good hitters in the lineup... If you havent noticed yet, Washington is 6-4 L 10 and has been hitting the ball pretty well, well enough to get a W here. REGULATORS, MOUNT UP!!!!!!

It's the Washington Nationals! If you're going to combine the phrase "Play of the century" and the team "Washington Nationals" I would expect the opponent to be the play.

I never thought it would be possible to lay so many units on a team of this calliber either but you have zero knowledge if you lean Pittsburg here. GL though,

I WILL TAIL YOU. I ACTUALLY LOVE THAT PLAY. THEY'VE BEEN HOT AS OF LATE. AND IN MLB TEAMS ALWAYS GET IN A SLUMP OR STREAK.  GL

I lean the other way. I like Lannan but I think you underrate Ohlendorf (Olendinger as you refer to him). In Ohlendorf's last 4 home starts he has thrown 25 innings and allowed just 18 hits, 5 earned runs (1.80 ERA) with a 19:7 K:BB ratio and a WHIO of 1.00. In Ohlendorf's 10 home starts this year, the Pirates are 8-2. He has a home ERA of 3.39 and has allowed just a .248 average. On the road. Lannan has a 5.51 ERA and a 3-6 record. he has thrown 50 2/3 innings and allowed 60 hits with a 23:23 K:BB ratio and 1.64 WHIP.

Pitt 9-4 vs. LH's at home, scoring 4.6 rpg and hitting .264. Pirates have won their L4 vs. LH's at home.

Not sure how it can be your play of the century especially when you throw in that the Nats are 12-37 on the road and Ithink are 4-15 their last 19 road starts against righties.

I wish you luck. Like I said, despite the road numbers, I like Lannan but prefer the under and lean towards the Pirates. Pirates are 11-2 under at home in those games, and have gone under in 8 straight. The Nats are 12-1-2 under 1st 5 in Lannan's L15 starts. The Nats are 16-5 under in all Lannan starts, including 7-2 under on the road. Pirates are  7-3 under in Ohlendorf's 10 home starts. Under is 12-1 L13 Wash games as favorite. Pitt 21-7-2 under in L30 and 11-3 under in L14 at home.

Great insight GameHunter........ You fail to realize that all those stats leaning towards the Pirates are out the window! Yeah you say Olendinger is good at home... Well with the team he "USED" to have, I might agree. But when your middle infield, first baseman, and entire outfield are gone who do you rely on? I am capping this game as the GOC because you have Washington's ace on the mound that has been great over his last starts and you have a team that has lost EVERYTHING! WHY LEAN PITT? They are a high school team right now!

When a terrible team loses "everything", they are often better off. I think McCutcheon is a decent leadoff hitter. Andy Laroche and Delwyn Young (.316) are OK. Garrett Jones is a stud with 10 HR's in 96 AB's and a .323 average. Pearce is a nice youn gprospect with power. Moss is a solid prospect and Doumit is one of the NL's best hitting catchers. I think these young guys will play with enthusiaism and certainly could care less that the Pirates traded away their veterans. Lannan still has poor overall road numbers and Ohlendorf has been more than soldi at home. The Nats should not be road favorites over a high school team so I think there is tremendous risk if you are thinking that the Bucs aren't capable with young prospects. I hope you win btu Lock of the Century, Season or Month is far fetched here.

You think the guys they traded were doing better than say a young guy like Garrett Jones who already has 10 HR's in 96 at-bats and a .323 average?

I dont think that but can this rookie carry a entire team? I dont think so... The veterans on this squad played great defense up the middle and gave this team a "shot" to win... A bunch or rookies can hang it up!
