Say a total is 5.5. Say after the 1st 2 periods, you can have the score to be tied 2-2 or 3-1 or 4-0.
Which score preference would you prefer if you have the over 5.5? What about the under 5.5?
To me, I felt like 2-2 was best for the Over since once a team scores, its 3-2 and other team needs to score to tie. However, i noticed many times there is a ton of more defense when its a tied score as oppose to being a blowout say 4-0 or bigger lead of 3-1.
Then I noticed if its 4-0, then the chance of more goals is higher because the leading team can get lazy and give up a goal or so. The same can be said about the team getting zipped. They could get lazy and not play hard on defense if they know they going to lose anyways.
Another example I want to use is this.
I mean, i see lot of games where its 4-1 near the end and then someone scores a goal in the last minute to make it 5-1 or 4-2. However, if its 3-2, then defense will be tighter but once it gets to the last 2 minutes or so?? Is this correct hockey experts?? That the losing team would drop their goalie to get an extra scorer which increases the chance of an empty netter? Which situation here is better for an over 5.5 with like 2 minutes left. 3-2 or 4-1?

It all depends on what teams are playing, but generally 3-1 is the best. when its 2-2 the teams tend to play more conservatively and there are less scoring chances. When its 3-1 the ice is a lot more open as the losing team is trying to rally. As long as they're not playing some super conservative team who just dumps it in the corner every possession and traps then the over should hit
