On first glance I was looking for some outsiders, teams other than Canada to cause a stir, or at least get to the final. I was in search of chemistry first and foremost. Then I was looking for goalies who could get hot, someone capable of stealing a game. That made me look at Sweden with Lundqvist and Finland with Backstrom/Kiprusoff. Both teams were fantastic in 2006. Sweden is dangerous of course. They're well balanced, but I'm not one to put too much faith in Lundqvist. Then there's Slovakia with Halak and Czech Republic with Vokoun. Halak is having a breakout year in Montreal and has put together a couple 40 save wins this season, which is what it will likely take to topple Canada or Russia. Vokoun has been one of the best goalies this season on a below average team in Florida. The problem with this though is none of these teams can match the depth of Canada. The Canadiens have Brodeur, Luongo, and Fleury who has proven himself as a big game goalie looking back at last year's Stanley Cup game 7 win in Detroit. Canada has 4 very dynamic lines including the Thornton-Heatley-Marleau line which has been spectacular for San Jose this year. There's been a lot of dispute over the selections for the Canadian team, but I'm quite fond of the choices. Getzlaf and Perry. Niedermayer and Pronger. They (the aforementioned) are older of course, but they have a grip of experience. Also, the pairing of Keith and Seabrook is a smart choice. While individually they aren't the most talented some might say, they've been very strong for the Blackhawks. In the Canadian team, despite the clash of stars and such, most of these combinations have solid chemistry together. They're really good too. This brings me to Russia which undoubtedly has some of the most explosive offensive players in hockey, but their is a major dropoff on the defensive end in comparison with the Canadians. And as the tournament goes on, this will start to have it's effect. Russia is also in a very competitive group with the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Both of these teams are dangerous, and I'm convinced the Russians will be tested early. In the end, I came up empty finding reasons. My research kept directing me toward Canada although I tried my best to find reasons to find value in other teams. Canada is by a considerable margin the most balanced and deepest team in my eyes. I rate their chances of claiming gold in Vancouver at least 50%.

this is quite humerous doesn't everyon have a 50% shot of winning gold until well of course until they lose. Isn't that the same as saying if I could skate and play hockey my chances of playing professionally would be 50%

I have been trying to find a way not to take canada in this because I feel it would be to predictable.
But the more I think about it the more reasons I find to take Canada. We can only expect our goaltenders to play like they have to earn such a reputation.
I think it will come down to a very emotional gold medal game between Russia and Canada.

Not exactly how I expected to get to the SF, I thought Canada would win their group and the goal differential would be large enough to get the 1st seed. Nonetheless, they defeated Germany to qualify for QF and then stormed by Russia as Russia's defense was simply overwhelmed. Note I didn't write anything about the USA in my preview for Olympic gold because I didn't know what to expect from USA, but they've surprised me. They've had a lot of luck on their side, but that isn't taking anything away from them. They play hard and Miller can shut down anyone. I hope Canada will defeat Slovakia and get a rematch against USA to avenge the defeat in the preliminary round.

Thanks fellas. Team USA was the one team I didn't put in my writeup because I had no idea what to expect from them. They were awesome this tournament. Ryan Miller was only the beginning of their outstanding play.

Canada to win Gold +132
6-2 +4.22 in the Olympics
Without the play of Miller Team USA would have been bounced in the prelims and at least by the Swiss in thier 2nd game, but Nice try and well done by them.
