i was discussing about the sens 08/09 and i'd say they could miss the playoffs...i believe they will, not by far, but they wont win their divison for sure and i expect them to land behind philadelphia on the 9th spot in the east!
am i crazy or what do you think?

well,i dont see the pens making the 1st so easy, they lost laruaque, ruutu, malone, hossa of course and roberts.

yeah, crosby and malkin are the guys, but other teams like montreal or nyr had a better offseason imo,could be close, but i dont see them making the 1st place!

If the RANGERS have any cap space..... they should think of re-signing a consistent 25 goal man like SHANNY. Forget about SUNDIN. If the RANGERS are under the cap, they have room to make trades at the deadline. Then the NYRs have time to decide at that point if they are a ''buyer'' or a ''seller''. If signing SUNDIN puts them at the ceiling of the cap, they are kinda'screwed.

I can't see the RANGERS fighting for 2nd place in the EAST Conference. Not sure how they replace JAGR's offensive creativity. Scott Gomez with his 16 goals won't fill the void.

yes you are right, i'm a rangersfan. as i said about the penguins, i think they lost too much and didnt compensate losing guys like laraque or ruutu. godard cant fill this spot. dont missunderstand me, the pens are great, but no way they are better than last year imo.
as for the rangers, well i was happy straka and jagr were traded away, they both peaked off for 1-2 years, straka maybe for longer. and right, naslund is the big question, but i put on drury and gomez. drury will be the next captain, i hope. gomez will have much more space to do his best without straka and jagr.
and their is a much underrated zherdev, i promise a big season from him, he is such a good player who needs to be on a good team.

Agree with your assessment on JAGR & STRAKA. I think with todays rules [no clutching & grabbing], JAGR could still be a force. His biggest obstacle would have been that muscle between his ears. He could be great on any given night....if he so desired.

The Sens will sneak into 7th or 8th. Having three great scorers goes a long way in today's NHL (during the regular season), and if you take a look around, most teams are lacking in depth. This is assuming that Gerber gives them his typically average goaltending.

A lot of people have written off the Senators for this year, unjustly so I think. That end to last season was certainly dissapointing but recall that Alfredsson, Kelly and Fisher were all dealing with major injuries for the last few weeks of the season and playoffs.
The cokeheads Emery, McGrattan and Redden are out and we've brought in character guys like Jason Smith and Jarkko Rutuu.
With Smith, Volchenchov and Phillips we've got 3 premiere shutdown D-Men, Kuba should be a nice fit, and then youngsters like Lee can start getting some time to develop. Defenseive lapses from Redden and Meszaros are gone, but on the flip side we lose our top 2 puck moving D-men, probably our biggest weakness now.
Gerber gets a lot of criticism but I'm fine with him in there for the season. Recall that he was the one in nets for the first 2-3 weeks of last season when they went on that incredible winning streak. Murray now has two 1st round draft picks for next year, 1 of which I suspect will be involved in a big goalie trade if Gerber can't handle the pressure.
This year's team isn't that far removed from the Sens that started so well in 2007-08. We've sorted out the locker room problems and added a solid coach in Craig Hartsburg which I think will really help us improve.
We've got decent secondary scoring with guys like Vermette and Fisher. Foligno is going to get a lot of time this year. Role players like Neil, Rutuu, Bass, McAmmond, Kelly, and Donovan will fill out the 3rd and 4th line. I'd like to see them add in a big body like Shanahan or even Glen Murray but overall I'm happy with the off-season moves.
By no means do I expect to finish 1st in the East but I think the Sens are actually a stronger team this year than last as we've sorted out a lot of the issues that were holding the team back.

The same thing is said about Spezza once in awhile now too though, hard to say what's the truth for certain. But it was said that McGrattan, Emery, and Spezza were hitting the bars together a lot and that was a big reason that McGrattan was moved.

Don;t forget Fisher, Vermette and Kelly all 20+ goal scorers who kill penalties too. Ottawa's problem isn't the forwards its the back-end.

That's not a very good D behind Phillips and Volchenkov. Smith has good leadership and grit but won't be a top 4 defensemen all season IMO. Don't forget they are playing in front of a goaltender who has bricks as pads and gives out rebounds left and right.
They will finish somewhere between 6th and 8th in the east and exit in the first round again, their chance at a cup has come and gone as teams like the Penguins, Caps, Flyers, Habs are all younger and on the uprise.
I am interested to see how Mike Fisher handles the pressure of being paid $6 million this year though. I know he is good two-way player who give a 110% every shift but $6 MILLION (4.2million cap hit for the next 5 years). He has been a fan favorite in Ottawa and can't do anything wrong but I think he going to have to be more than a 3rd line center making this kind of money and put up more than his usual 20 goals and 40 points.
