#1 Posted: 8/6/2012 12:05:05 PM Anyone that is following Olympic basketball has read or heard something about Spain intentionally losing to Brazil so they could avoid a potential match up with the US until the finals. I just want to know what everyone's thoughts on that are and what side you're taking if any. Thanx!

#3 Posted: 8/6/2012 12:17:11 PM Pretty much every article or post I read is inferring that Spain has more to gain by losing the game than by winning. All that of course is speculation, but its making me take a hard look @ the Brazil ML. I would love to hear as many intelligent opinions and thoughts as possible. Keep them coming.

#5 Posted: 8/6/2012 12:22:51 PM Interesting dilemia for Spain but I have a very hard time believing that the Gasol brothers would be willing to throw a game so they can avoid playing a team they want to play anyway. Could you imagine the ribbing between Gasol and Kobe the following year. I just don't see this team or any team purposely trying to lose a game. |

#6 Posted: 8/6/2012 12:29:17 PM I don't see it, I personally like Spain today. I think they will have a good showing after the let down against Russia, and I'm sure Spain thinks it can beat the USA regardless of when they play. |

#8 Posted: 8/6/2012 12:38:24 PM I agree jesron. Its just so tempting to pull the trigger on the Brazil ML @ +200ish when every article you read is saying it would benefit Spain in the long run to lose today's game. But again, its all speculation from the writers and doesn't really factor into what the outcome will be. I guess that's why they call it gambling.

#10 Posted: 8/6/2012 12:45:02 PM earl... if you talk to a professional athlete it would be rare to hear a single one of them admit defeat. I am sure if you ask Spain they think they are the best team out there and they think they can beat USA. Guess what in one game series if things happen just right they sure can. It is even harder to get a professional athlete to throw a game especially in a game like the Olympics when it is not about money but rather national pride. If Spain were to be able to best USA it would be like their version of Miracle on Ice (perhaps on a smaller scale). I just don't see this team or any team purposely losing a game. BOL! |

#11 Posted: 8/6/2012 1:59:28 PM Brazil has the same thing to gain as Spain so what's to stop them from losing deliberately as well? |

#12 Posted: 8/6/2012 2:36:17 PM Ha dg84 what an awesome game that would be. No you take the shot, no you take the shot, no you take the shot. Under, under, under! No comment on the total but something tells me it is not going to be that much of a $hit fest! |

thats bull mate.. the players are more pessimistic when they face MUCH superior teams than fans are.. Obviously in the media and in the public they wont admit it
Spain players KNOW their chances of beating USA is less than 1%,, they are playing for SILVER.. that's what this is all about. Everyone knows USA will get gold ffs

#17 Posted: 8/7/2012 12:51:52 PM Olympics had shown that you can't throw games away just for betting positioning. I honestly think that Brazil is a good team. THey have as much NBA players as Spain.

#18 Posted: 8/7/2012 3:56:23 PM Brazil played much better down the stretch than Spain plain and simple. I don't think they threw the game in way shape or form. |

#19 Posted: 8/7/2012 11:14:13 PM I don't have proof they threw it but I think they did let off a bit at the end. If they did lose on purpose I would think they were smart. Not glaringly obvious losing like the badmiton people did and get disqualified but losing seemed to be the better choice in that game. Have little to no shot at gold so why not maximize your chances at 2nd place? |

Your statement is not true...2006 Winter Olympics in Italy....
Last game of group play (hockey) - Sweden vs. Slovakia....If Sweden won, they would face Canada in the Q-finals, a loss and they would play Switzerland....
Final Score.....Slovakia 3, Sweden 0...and that's about how many shots they had....
Sweden went on to win Gold.....
Peter Forsberg admitted that they 'threw' the game....but they won. |
