#1 Posted: 1/5/2012 3:17:16 PM Good afternoon fellas, a great night in the NBA on
Wednesday. Picked up an important 10
units last night, trying to stack the bankroll up a bit, slowly but surely. The dreaded TNT Thursday is back,
historically it has been a dreadful spot for your boy Mak. In years past I would tend to overplay my
hand on Thursdays, games which did not really interest me I ended up wagering
on due to the fact that it was all that was really available. Last year was a lot better, I would like to
think I matured from my degenerate ways, if I didn’t like the 2-3 games on Thursday;
I would skip it all together. I have
already skipped a day this season with a 10 game slate so I am hoping the curse
of TNT Thursdays is over for me. I have
a certain style when it comes to capping my games, first and foremost my mind has gotta be
relaxed, I go one by one, game by game, I never look at what else is available
until I have done an acceptable amount of research on the specific game. I had no idea that today’s slate only
consisted of 4 games, I was actually quite shocked. I thought due to the shortened season I would
never see an NBA slate this minimal. Out
of the 4 games on the board tonight, I actually like 3 of them and may decide
to play all 3. As of now I have locked
in two plays and am waiting on the status of LeBron “Tell Me How My Dirk Tastes”
James and Dwayne Wade. Once the status
of those individuals is clear, I may add that game on my card as well. As always gents, I wish you the best of luck
on your wagers. Kwaheri from Kenya - - -
MAK
LOS ANGELES LAKERS @ PORTLAND TRAILBLAZERS
PLAY: BLAZERS ML -150
The Rose Garden and the Los Angeles Lakers just do not get
along. Arenas all over the NBA love it
when the Lakers come to town, when I was in Toronto, I made it an emphasis to
go to as many Lakers games as possible, not because I love watching any
particular player on the Lakers, especially Kobe. Don’t get me wrong I always enjoy watching
great players come into Toronto and spank my Raptors, but the main reason I
always got tickets to the Lakers game was because of the atmosphere. It was electric, it seems wherever the Lakers
go, especially in those arenas cross conference involving teams that don’t
stand much of a chance in the playoffs, fans just love the Lakers. At times in Toronto, there was more cheering
for a Kobe made shot then there was for the home team. This is prevalent in a majority of arenas
across the NBA...but not in Portland.
Rip City despises the Lakers, they hate Kobe with a passion and they are
never afraid to voice their displeasure.
It has been as hostile an arena for the Lakers as any in the NBA and
their record over the past 3 years there is proof that it does make a difference. Tonight fans will be even more boisterous because
they have a lot to be optimistic about, for the first time in forever, the
Blazers have a better record than the Lakers and in my humble opinion, a better
team. Let’s start off with the Black
Mamba. Reports indicate that Kobe’s
wrist is so bad, that before every game he is receiving numbing injections. Now it’s not like I don’t believe Bryant, I
know the guy is a soldier and plays through a lot of pain, but Kobe also likes
making a lot of excuses, he is as arrogant as it gets, this wrist injury could
just be an excuse to mask the fact that he is having his worst season as a
pro. Kobe is shooting 41.7% tying his
rookie season for the worst mark in his illustrious career. The Mamba has a lot of personal issues he is
dealing with right now and that could be a problem as well, the wrist could
actually be as bad as we hear or it could just be that Kobe is not the same
Mamba we remember, he is nearing the end of his career, still very dangerous,
but not the same guy who can carry these Lakers to a championship. Tonight he will have his hands full against a
plethora of capable defenders. Wesley Matthews,
Gerald Wallace and Batum are all guys who will see some time on Kobe tonight, all
excellent defenders who have caused Kobe problems in the past. Bynum is coming off a massive 20 and 20
game. Last year who was dismal against
the Blazers averaging 4.5 points and 5 rebounds a game. Now obviously the kid is not going to
duplicate those putrid numbers, but Camby is an excellent defender, very savvy,
long and skilled enough down low to ensure Bynum does not go off for another
massive night. A few years back Pau
Gasol was considered to be the best low post big man in the game, right now
this year, I actually think Aldridge is a better overall player than Pau
Gasol. I think Aldridge will have his
way with Gasol tonight. This is the
first year Aldridge will not have to play out of his position against the
Lakers, with Camby down low at the 5 spot, Big L is free to “power” any forward
to the ground. G-Wall showed you why he
is one of the best defenders in the league today, he is one man who can stop
Durant which is hell of an accomplishment, Matt Barnes and Metta World Peace
have no chance against him. Wesley and
Raymond will have to consistently put up offensive numbers tonight, it is imperative
to the Blazers success that they have some starting back-court production. The bench points go to the Blazers as
well. Steve Blake, the man formerly
known as Artest, Troy and Kapono are no match for the potent duo of Batum and
Crawford. Kurt Thomas is no slouch
either and will provide solid minutes and strength down low. The 4-1 Blazers are undefeated at home and
the 4-3 Lakers are winless on the road, I don’t think any of that changed
tonight. Blazers will win this game.

#2 Posted: 1/5/2012 3:17:52 PM DALLAS MAVERICKS @ SAN ANTONIO SPURS
PLAY: DALLAS MAVERICKS ML +105
I understand the hesitation in taking the Mavs, I had the
same hesitation. But my only problem
here is I think the wrong team is favoured therefore I see a lot of value in
the Mavs at above even to win the game.
I understand that the San Antonio Spurs were the best home team in the
NBA last year going a superb 36-5. I
understand the Spurs were the best team in the West...but what you guys need to
understand is that was with Manu playing 80 games! Manu was playing at an
all-star level, he was carrying this team early on during the season and it was
clearly evident that if the Spurs had any chance to reclaim the top spot in the
West, it would be up to Manu. With him
out for 6 weeks I see a lot of challenges for the Spurs. If any team can overcome adversity it is the
San Antonio Spurs, but right now I just don’t see James Anderson and Gary neal
being the answer to their problems. I
love Tim Duncan but he is not the same player, not even close. Tony Parker is going to have a huge game
tonight, but I just don’t suspect it to be enough. Last year the Spurs won the season series 3-1
but that was with the big three intact and playing excellent ball combined with
the fact that Dirk was not there for 2 of those wins. Just look at the numbers, I don’t think Tony
and Tim can duplicate what they did last year against these Mavs nor do I think
they can offset the loss of Manu on their own.
Looking at last year’s Mavs team, I have no idea how they managed to
compete let alone win a championship.
Despite their atrocious start to the season, I still stick to what I
wrote in my initial season preview, the Mavs are better this year than they
were last year. The way Rick Charlisle
has set up his rotation was initially a head-scratcher to me. But now that roles are being etched out and
the cohesiveness is showing, I can see what he has created. He has created one of the deadliest benches
in the NBA. Not many teams are going to
be able to compete with the bench of Jason Terry, Vince Carter, Lamar Odom,
Rodrique Beaubois and Ian Mahinmi. What
most people forget is Terry and Odom are sixth men of the year candidates on separate
teams, this year they are coming off the bench together, that is just a deadly
combination. Vince still has a little
bit of game, he may have lost his shot but he still manages to accumulate a
fair amount of attention on the floor clearing space and he has decent
playmaking ability. If the coaching
staff can get him to do the intangibles for this team, that would be an
excellent piece to have off the bench.
Beaubois may not be the key role player I thought he was going to be,
but he is coming into his own slowly.
The key to this bench is the progression of Ian Mahinmi, his size and
stature alone is dominating, but his confidence is higher than it has ever
been. The Mavs are a powerful road team,
especially when they win. Off back to
back wins, they are 11-0 ATS on the road in their next game. We know that they seem to succeed more on the
road than at home, this is a spot where their confidence is high, their roster
is deep and their opponents are weak.
Mavs straight up.

I understand bro, let me clarify. I still think that Dallas Mavericks are a better regular season team than they were last year. In terms of duplicating the same playoff success they had...I don't think that will be possible. Basically they are without Stevenson, Butler, J.J and Tyson. I really think they upgraded from Stevenson, granted he was an excellent defender and could nail a few long balls from now and then, but consistently offesnive, he was not. Butler was outstanding for the first half of the season and a major reason they were one of the best in the West, but they managed just fine without him en route to a championship. The two guys they will miss the most during the post-season are J.J and Tyson. Both were on contract years and showed why they deserved the lucrative contracts they received from the Tims and Knicks. No one can duplicate J.J's penetration and no one will duplicate Tyson's ability on the defensive low block. That being said, the additions off a healthy Beaubois, Odom, Carter, West, a more confident Mahinmi and now Yi makes me certain that in terms of being a better overall regular season team, I really think they are. They have more depth overall to sustain them throughout the season.

#10 Posted: 1/5/2012 3:58:53 PM I don't know if I can get on board Mak with the thinking that DAL is actually better this year than last. Chandler was so huge for them on the defensive end and glass that replacing him with "Brenda" Haywood just is a huge drop off in my mind... For all of Stevenson's crazy behind face tattoo self, he was a pretty good on-ball perimeter defender (FAR better than Vince Carter)... Obviously Odom helps but he's not going to protect the rim on that second unit.

That is very true paradox, Mavs looked a hell of a lot better yesterday, more comfortable with their roles and a lot more cohesive as a unit. The Spurs struggled to put away a Western lottery team with Gary Neal and James Anderson doing absolutely nothing to negate the loss of Manu the Argentinian aristocrat. I think it will be a battle fit for the best in texas, but I suspect the Mavs to overcome. BOL buddy.

That makes me feel a lot better about the pick Kap, I think the Rose Garden is going to be pumped tonight. When is the last time the Lakers went into the Rose Garden with the mentality "we are not the better team" I mean there is an article in the Los Angeles Times that states the Lakers are going to lose against the Blazers. I think the last time the expectations were this low for the Lakers Smush Parker was starting for them. BOL brother.

Brenda Haywood, now that's priceless bro.
You make some really solid points Kap, check out post #8, my reply to Fred. I totally agree in terms of Stevenson's defensive ability. I think they will miss J.J a lot more than Tyson if they can manage to get Mahinmi into the defender I think he is capable of being. He will never amount to what Tyson did, but I think Tyson and J.J played way above their skill level in the playoffs due to the fact that the opportunity to make some serious dough was clearly evident. Contract year is a huge incentive for players to play above and beyond. I think the Mavs will be a better regular season team to be honest, but they will not come close to duplicating the success they had in the post season.

#21 Posted: 1/5/2012 5:26:32 PM With you on Portland tonight Mak.. sharpest play on the board. I'm laying the points though as my local has set their moneyline at -175! Too steep when a two bucket win still cashes. Their match-ups in the past haven't come down to the last possession.. so I'll wager that this trend continues tonight.
