I have commented on many injuries in the NFL. Again, I have worked for some of the major sports teams. I have not ever worked with Peyton Manning nor have I ever seen any true medical evidence of his injury. This is speculation on a player of his caliber with this kind of injury. This is speculation, like over a beer kind of stuff.

I am concerned about Peyton. If someone knows different please let me know but I have seen no videos of him throwing in the last year. You see, if he has nerve damage ( and he does) then there is a significant chance it never returns to the point where he can play in the NFL again. He may never regain the strength in his tricep that would be necessary to him to throw a football 40 -60 yards down the field. Never.
That said, the Colts should have a pretty good idea right now what his arm strength is. There is a very, very important date coming up for Peyton and the Colts. It is March 8th. It is my understanding that is the Colts have him on the roster on March 8th, they owe him an absurd 28 million dollars. You have to think ( cuz I sure do) that the Colts will not give 28 million dollars to a 36 year old QB with only 40% tricep strength. Before I would write that check, I would have a physical and a simple drill to check out the ol arm.
Also, it really surprised me that the Colts cut their GM and President recently. Maybe this was related to the terrible year they had but I could not help think they wanted to keep Peyton and the Irsays were ready to cut their losses on Manning. More speculation.

What this is all adding up to is what will happen in the next couple of weeks.
1) A decision must be made on Manning. I would be floored if he gets the whole 28 million. Floored. Look for a reduced deal or ready........ that Peyton is cut from the Colts or traded. (I would have to think cut because who in their right mind would want to pay him 28 million right now?)Can you imagine, Peyton Manning is cut!
2) Take a close look at what the Colts do, they know if he will play next year. IF they do give him 28 million take a shot at one of the greatest QB's ever next year in fantasy around the 4 th round. If they give him a part, how much do they give him. Less than 10 million, be afraid, be very afraid. If he is cut, run, run run.
3) The Colts will draft Luck number one, count on it. The only way they do not do this is if they get and obscene trade involving a stud young QB and the 5-10 other top picks. But he is the obvious number one and it will happen.
4)Watch for Manning video throwing the rock, maybe it is already out there but I have seen nothing. If someone has a clip let me know. The lack of evidence of his rehab and arm strength though indicates to me, he has played his last down in the NFL.

oh yes.  Peyton will be cut, without a doubt.  The fans would cry, but the GM won't give a damn.

Agreed, that is why I think they went and got a new GM. If this does happen, can you imagine being this poor guy?
Outrage would not even start to describe what will happen...

I agree that the  "firing" of the front office wasn't so much a one-sided decision from the top as was reported. In my opinion, the GM and President backed Peyton....they acted out of loyalty, and out of gratitude to him for what he has done for the Colts.  At least I want to believe that is the way it went down.

After reading on the internet that Manning went to Belgium to get stem cells injected into his spinal column (who knows if that statement  is 100% true or not), I have to think that he is in big trouble physically.  Couple that with the genetic condition (narrowing of the spinal column) that the 3rd Manning brother has, I have to think that this injury has been developing over a long period of time.

One thing is for sure......the Colts cannot afford to pay Manning and cough up the contract that Andrew Luck is going to fetch. Luck's deal has to be in the 50 million range with 20-30 guaranteed.....when you add that glimmer to the 28 million due Manning, it is way too much stack for one position.

The Indy fans are going to be plenty pissed off, but it is a tough spot for the Colts franchise.  Just imagine if the Colts pay Peyton the big cash and play him next season...and he suffers a catastrophic neck injury on national TV infront of the entire nation. That would be a PR nightmare that the Colts and the NFL as a whole would have trouble dealing with.

It is a truly unfortunate situation....I was hoping to watch Manning for a few more seasons. Good thread and insights though....

Fellas, Peyton Manning was THE best quarterback in the league.

Better than Brees, Brady, his brother Eli, Roethlisberger, all of 'em.

Remember that team was a hospital unit-taking people off the street-and still making the playoffs.

They lost one guy-him-and they became THE worst team in the league.  That's how good he was.

IF he's healthy-and that surgery is a b!tch, he lost his cushion is his vertebrae and has a plate screwed in-and he goes to a competitor who could use a top qb like the Jets-the Jets can win it all IMO.

I don't debate that at all...in my eyes Peyton Manning is  the MVP of the 2011-2012 season.

With him in the lineup the Colts were a contender...without him they were 1-15....there has never  been a more obvious, definitive measurement of one player's value  in NFL history.

This is definitely coming to pass. I think they will cut him, or he retires.
Hard to imagine.
One thing is for sure, he aint getting 28 million come March 8 or so, not after making 26 million last year and not playing a down.
No way.

If so, I hope PM ends up in TEN and sticks it to INDY in the upcoming season.

Even if Peyton doesn't play another down, he's a first ballot HOFamer regardless. That legacy will live on.

And I'd much rather see him on the NFL network crew replacing M. Irvin or Warren Sapp myself.

I will hate to see Peyton go even as a Texans fan. He has been a pain in our fools for too many years BUT he is a class act and an easy HOF 1st ballot. Hell, should be voted in the day after he retires. I agree with above, that no one person has had such a dramatic effect on a team one season to the next with his absence this year. Did not see that one coming at least not that bad. BOL to Peyton and I will cringe every play if he returns knowing what COULD happen.

Thanks!
This is a great article and echos what I have been saying for two weeks or so.
One thing, to me he does not risk permanent damage by playing, this is over blown, the fused vertebrae should hold up as well as any old vertebrae would. The only issue is how far along will the nerve regenerate. As they say, it may still get better but it is worry time.
Great find- Thanks!

The doctors came out today and said the neck is stable. They also said, the tricep sucks behind (not in those words)
March 8th is looming. I heard they could both agree to push this date back, that makes some sense for sure.

They finally said he cannot throw the ball.

Unfortunately, this may never change?

Get well soon Peyton

Doc, Peyton might require more surgery and fusion procedure, not looking good for him down the stretch.

Yes, I am still of the belief, he will never play again. Not so much from a safety issue but because he will never regain the strength he needs to throw the rock like an NFL QB.

I think Irsay cuts him on March 8, they may both extend it as Peyton knows in his heart, he cannot play for another team right now.

Sad.

There would seem to be some truth to this as Manning played for the now Duke coach at Tennessee is what I read.

I still think he is not really that healthy, that said, if his arm is 90% he will make any team an instant contender, he is that good.
Except for the Lams...
