So does this years playoffs format works exactly like college football OT

Overs got slight advantage this year

Unlike regular-season overtime rules, in the NFL playoffs both teams could have the chance to score in overtime, even if the first team with the ball kicks a field goal.

If a field goal is made on the first possession of overtime, the other team gains possession. If that team scores a touchdown, game over. If it kicks a field goal to tie, then the next team to score wins. The only way the game ends on the first possession is if that team scores a touchdown or if the defense forces a safety or returns a turnover for a score.

Shoot then unlike college u win the coin toss you would rather play defense first.  Pro I would think u want the ball first?  If u score a td,  forces the other team to score a td if they do,  u get the ball back and first to score wins right?

Thanks for your post. NFL really has it's own world of insanity and unfairness, why not just let each team starts from opponent's 25 yards line just like NCAAF instead who scores TD first will in in NFL OT. Under new NFL OT rule, a team won the coin toss still has advantage of winning the game. Game should end in fairness and perfoemance not on who wins coin toss.

yes why not be 100% logical instead of half assing it. This just makes the college OT system look even more superior, since the NFL is admitting its old one was a failure... so why not go all the way?
Weird.

Well, 4th and 1 from the 20 in OT finally got interesting, though. So it is a slight improvement. But the most fun OT games are where TDs are traded for awhile, not FGs, and in this format that awesome experience is impossible. I hope fans keep the pressure on to get it right, since they bothered to change it at all. Good post!

@Pac12 - Yeah, you're still probably gonna want the ball first in this format because if you score a TD it's game over - the other team can't respond.

The only time you wouldn't, I imagine, is a defensive type game where TD's aren't being scored - then a coach may want to kick and try to get the quick stop so they can get the good field position and play to kick for the win.

It'd be cool if we got to see this play out this year.

ok you lost me there on your first paragraph.  I thought both teams will have the opportunity to get the ball

I agree.

I think it could modify to any team that score a TD in OT need to go for 2 points conversion. And both teams should have equal number of possession(s).

I don't like the college rule much either. It is a bit lame that the play start at 25 yard line. It should at least be at the 40 yards line and make team to earn at least a first down before kicking the lame FG.

The flip side to this is the team who has the ball 2nd will go for fourth down all the time.

There should be a limit to a number of fourth down. 2nd team can only attempt the same number of fourth downs as the first team. If the first team did not have any 4th down then the 2nd team can not go for any.

@Pac - If the first score in overtime is a TD, the game is over. If they settle for a FG, THEN the other team gets a chance to respond. If they do, it becomes sudden death.

So, a team with the ball first in OT still has an edge and a chance to win the game without needing to play D.

Let me clarify: If a team opens OT scoring with a FG, the other team gets a chance to answer with a FG to force sudden death, or a TD to win

If its 4th and 1 opponent on the 10 yard line goes for a td and gets it,  that is messed up if the other team don't have a chance to respond because of the fact they went for it on 4th down

Both offense and defense need to play the game. There is good and bad with getting the ball first. There is tremendous pressure for a team to score when they get the ball first. If they score only 3 points the first try, the other team will go for fourth down for every set of down until they either fail, get 3 points or to score a TD.

Yea that is the down fall of the rule definitely. I'm not sure they thought it all out.

college football OT is fucking assinine

There is nothing wrong with the regular season OT in the NFL. The defense gets paid too. Play D and get the ball back!
