Hi guys. Pro capper David Malinsky is throwing his hat in the survivor pool game a second straight year and he's sharing his weekly selections with Covers.com users.
Take a peek at his choice for Week 1:
It's time to try our hand again at navigating the churning waters of the NFL Survival Pool concept for 2010. But first, a bit of a preface before plunging.
Our goal from the opening kickoff is to win the pool, not to just survive from week to week and scramble forward. As such, there is a lot of schedule analysis before we begin, so that we can try to isolate the best situations to use the better teams. By doing this we run a much greater risk of an early knockout, but we will accept that risk in terms of developing the board as the season unfolds, much like as we would if handling chess pieces.
Having said that, our decision in Week 1 is a rather easy one: TENNESSEE is the call.
Jeff Fisher does not lose often when he has advantages and, while injuries riddled the Titan defense early last year, note that Fisher went 6-1 SU as a favorite following the bye week. Things really turned around for Tennessee after the bye week last season. They had a chance to get healthy and restart the Vince Young era in earnest.
Now they get a chance to control the flow of the game against an Oakland defense that was soft up front (2,488 rushing yards allowed at 4.5 per carry). One of the best scenarios for getting outright wins in the NFL is the home favorite with a strong ground game vs. the road dog that does not stop the run.
When you have control of the line of scrimmage, and a passionate opening day crowd enhancing that aspect of the flow, you can command the proceedings, especially with Fisher and his staff holding such significant edges over Tom Cable and the Raider assistants in terms of game prep and tactics.
