I have been thinking about this one all day and my original lean on this game has not changed. I am looking at a couple of different things that keep me coming back to my original lean.
The Bengals have had 10 players arrested in a 14 month span. They will be without 2 players tonight due to suspension. LB Odell Thurman and WR Chris Henry both will be out due to suspensions. I do beleive that all of the off the field problems the Bengals have had correlates directly to their on the field performance.
The bengals defense ranked 30th overall last year in the NFL and their pass defense ranked dead last. They did nothing significant, IMO, to improve upon that and must rely on their offense to put up enough points to compensate for their defensive struggles.
The Bengals have finished 8-8 in 3 of Marvin Lewis' 4 years. The lone bright spot was 2005 when they went 11-5 and won the division before watching Palmer's knee get trashed in the playoffs.
The Ravens added Willis McGahee in a trade with Buffalo during the off season. While McGahee is not Walter Payton, he certainly will provide the much needed running threat and ability the Raven's offense needs. McNair has a full year under his belt and posted respectable numbers last year with 3,050 passing yards, 16 TDs, and 12 picks. McNair has Mason, Clayton, and TE Heap all back this year and healthy.
The Ravens defense is the Ravens defense. This defense ranked 1st in the NFL last year in total defense and in takeaways with 48. They lose one player from that defense as Adalius Thomas went to the Patriots during the off season.
I am not sold on Marvin Lewis and I am not convinced that Carson Palmer will be able to put up enough points against this defense to compensate for the Bengals problems on the defensive side of the ball. I believe McNair will be much better than last year and I believe that McGahee is going to be a very positive acquisition. Additionally, I do beleive that all of the off the field problems the Bengals have had will correlate to some undisciplined mistakes made on the field tonight.
If you beleive, like I do, that Defense wins championships then you have to go with the Ravens tonight in Cincinnatti.
Pick: Baltimore Ravens +2.5But, what the hell do I know?

wdenham - 49er's lost twice to Arizona last year. Tonight, at home, on National TV, in the season opener, they get their revenge. Arizona defense is very questionable and I expect Smith and the boys to put up 30 tonight.
