And for the record  guys .......... ALL YOU HAVE TO DO TO GET INTO HEAVEN ACCORDING TO MY (CHRISTIAN) RELIGION IS :

 

Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and believe that he was sinless and Gods son. And that he died for your and my sins. So that we wouldnt have to go thru the pain he went thru.

Do you even understand the explanation of the Higgs boson?   Watch this 7 minute animated video.  Then try to explain why god or jesus or abraham never told us about quarks or photons or even atoms in the bible.

And BTW - time travel and parallel universes are much more believable than Noahs Ark, Abraham living 700+ years, walking on water, resurrecting from the dead, and Adam and Eve.

Never said you have to be a Christian.

I truly hope that heaven and hell are real, but realistically I don't think they are.

I always though that some people need something to believe in. They need heaven to be real to give their life meaning.

while going back in time to play the lottery might not be possible, "time travel" in principle is certainly very real...but it depends how you want to define it. Through what we understand about space-time, you can in theory travel "backwards" through someone else's perception of time [or forwards through your own, of course]. Time is relative. Without getting overly complicated about it; as velocity and gravity increase, time slows down. An astronaut that spends a year on the ISS, would return to earth around 0.015s younger than their earth counterparts.... shit, even a climber on the highest mountain on earth technically experiences (an extremely tiny amount of) time dilation, in comparison to someone at sea level because of the discrepancies in gravity at the two locations...

 If we could travel closer to light speed and obv, much greater distances, it would be possible to create larger discrepancies and would have a more dramatic effect. If you were to travel around the milky way at near-lightspeed, you could spend say 15years in transit, but upon your return, its likely that all of your friends and loved ones would be long dead, as for them 200+ years have passed......shit, you'd better hope that the earth is still there when you return.

I wonder if anyone watched one of the specials on either the science channel or history 2 or one of those types on the 7 biggest threats to our existence. It was pretty informative. Basically, best case scenario, we make it another few thousand years...maybe we get to 10,000, but even that is highly unlikely. Even if we don't destroy ourselves, there's gonna be some sort of extinction level natural disaster within the next few thousand years like a super volcano creating an coat of ash on the ozone layer, effectively a nuclear winter...or an asteroid blowing us to bits. Highly unlikely that it happens in our lifetime, but future generations may not be so lucky.

regardless of whatever pot you are trying to stir, if there is intelligent life out there, they would look upon us in the same way we look down upon chimpanzees. 

person sapiens share a 97+% genetic match with Chimpanzees. Look at the incredible difference between our species, and look at the feats our species: Weve created tall sky scrapers, multiple languages, a complex understanding of naturally occurring mathematical principles, weve created multi-ton steel birds to transport people across the globe, and shit weve even left our planet several times and landed a handful of objects on other planets! In comparison with chimps, who we have taught sign language and basic math, there lies a less than 3% discrepancy in our genetic makeup. 

With what we have accomplished over a species that we share 97% of the same DNA, we look down at them and remark "oh how quaint, it knows 2+2 is 4". Imagine now a complex alien life form, capable of long distance space travel. Imagine how the alien lifeforms would view us; weve only (relatively) recently sent a probe beyond out own solar system. Their math and physics comprehension they would learn as infants in their society, would be vastly superior to our deepest understanding of the universe from our top minds. 

Put simply they would remark "oh look, how quaint, it knows of Quarks". Then they would carry on to explore a far more interesting and intelligent planet. They certainly would know better than to try and make nice with a society hell bent on its own destruction.

thats not time travel per se but simple the incredible distance that light has to travel to reach us.

A more relatable and chilling stat is: If nuclear fusion suddenly stopped in our own sun, it would take a full 8 mins until we realized what has occurred.  

It makes me think of one of my favourite quotes from Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, when asked what he would do if an alien life form offered him a one way trip to anywhere in the universe:

"I'd visit a civilization on a galaxy 65 million light years away. Assuming I can get there instantaneously, I would look back to Earth with their presumably super telescopes and witness the extinction of the dinosaurs - the light of which is just now reach them."

There still exisits light, somewhere in this universe of every past moment, and in theory it would be possible to look back in time at an event in any region of the universe. Absolutely chilling...... To me at least....

thats neither nice, nor true.

the existence of a Higgs Boson particle does not rule out the possibility of "god". Its an extremely important discovery for physics' sake, but it does not explicitly disprove the existence of any sort of higher being.

I would agree that a literal interpretation of "God" as known in Judeo-Christianity is likely ruled out by the science, without a doubt. I think we both know though Van that it doesn't rule out in any way the existence of a higher power of sorts that either (a) set this universe into motion or (b) created the laws of reality that govern our interactions with the universe.

On a side note, I've started reading a book on quantum mechanics the last week or so. Absolutely mind blowing stuff. You need a pretty solid background in the subject from a layperson perspective for the book to make sense, but it is excellent and has really caused me to examine some very troubling questions in the world of science.

Not even close.

I disagree but you have very good points regardless. I am a Christian but not close minded on some of this stuff. 

One thing you cannot argue is the Bible is the best and most accurate history book in the world. Even atheist history professors do a lot of teaching out of the Bible.
