Calgary blows a five goal lead... FIVE... and still comes out of it with a point?!? Hunh? Will cookies and juiceboxes be served after the game? C'mon... If anything, they should have points taken away for such an embarassing turn of events.

Agreed  They should either go with the 3point system.

3pts for a win

2pts shootout win

1pt for overtime/shoot out loss

You can put the blame on NHL office (Bettman) for that.
 
It should be.. if you lose in OT, you get squat! no points

You got that right. Blame Bettman for trying to sell the game to the american masses, who want nothing to do with the game, and in turn fuck it up for all the true hockey fans

Its like they forgot about the fans they have now, and keep trying to satisfy the people who will never like hockey.

I like the 3 point system idea as well, but the NHL will NOT change its current point system because of how tight the standings are at the end of the year. It makes it look like there is parity in the league and also more teams are over .500 then teams under. All of which make fans more interested from the start to the end of the season.

The 3pt system won't work in the NHL.. it only works in Football (soccer) due to a lot of games ending in 0-0, 1-1 or 2-2 games as they do not have shootouts or OT..just injury time.
 
If Bettman wanted offense...they should scrap the current point system and implement goal differential.  At the end of the year standings and playoff seeding is based on your goal differential.
So..blowing out a team has a purpose.

Yes, only 4 on 4 in OT, and you can't even play D anymore.
 
I am 1 Yank that liked D. BUt, Jersey had a way to stop people so they changed the league.

I know the topic's been covered before, but this is the best solution:

2 points regulation or overtime win
1 point shootout win
0 points overtime or shootout loss

What kind of idiotic league rewards a team for losing? "Well, they both played hard." So? Is the NFL going to give the Jets half a game in the standings for holding the lead until 14 seconds left in tonight's game?

And as for making it as though "all teams have a chance"... When better than 50% of your teams make the playoffs, trust me, everyone has a chance (except for the Leafs - *ZING!*)

I always thought it was unfair for a team that wins in a shootout get the same amount of points as a regulation game winner.  Makes zero sense.
 
They should go to the 3 point  system
That way teams dont just dump it inwith 10 minutes left in game waiting for the OT/SO to happen all the while guaranteeing themselves a minimum of 1 point for going to OT/SO.
 
Watch last 10 minutes of any tied game.  Both teams take zero chances.

Moral victories do count for something.   Therefore, the losing OT team gets one point because they fought hard with their opponent to get to OT.

I apologize for bumping my own thread, but after watching the Wild come back on the Hawks last night, I mean... C'mon! How can some of you defend a system that rewards a team for not only losing the game, but for losing it in the manner in which they did.

If you want to make the "moral victory" argument, fine, but somehow I doubt Kane and Toews were high fiving everyone on the bus after the game. And as for the "both teams played hard" argument, I don't know, but it doesn't look like the Hawks were playing too damn hard the final 14 minutes of the game.

So for those of you in the 'YES' camp who had the Hawks last night (and using your logic) I want you to call up your sportsbook and explain to them: "Well, Chicago had the lead for most of the game, so shouldn't I at least get some of my money back?" Let us know how that works out.
