okay i bought a 500 gig hard drive, downloaded acronis true image software.  Did the whole cloning process and now i have my old hard drive on the new one.  Thanks for the help getting this done.
One question for you.
Can i take the new hard drive out and save that one, putting the old one back in and using it until it dies?   Old one is a seagate and its pretty quiet, new one is a western digital and its a little bit noisy.  I should have ordered a seagate because all best buy had was western digitals today.

Sure you can do that.  But personally I would put the new one in and keep the old one in a closet.  You are getting crunched on space.

But you can do it either way with no problem.

Glad everything worked out for you.

It went really smooth, amazing how that software does everything.

One thing i dont understand about the software is, you can makeup an image of your computer and it will be stored on your computer.  What happens if your computer has a problem and you cant get on the hard drive?

One other thing, how long does chdsk take to run usually on a 160gig hard drive?  Am getting the message on startup that the disc needs to be checked for consistancy, but i just keep clicking thru instead of letting it run.

thanks again
am keeping you good and busy in this forum

If your image was on the hard drive that crapped out, you would be SOL.  That's why I get into it so often with the computer companies that don't ship the operating system disk with computers anymore. They say they have a restore partition on the hard disk, but what if the hard drive goes belly up on you ?

Well they do have a program that will back up your whole hard drive when you 1st start it and you can use it every time you want to.  But I've never had anyone use the thing.

You should be able to burn the image to a DVD.

The chkdsk should take over a few minutes.  You should go ahead and let that run.

Exactly.  What good is having the stuff on a partition if you cant get to it to recover anything.

Hey i bought one of these usb to usb things today in case i wanted to transfer some files to my laptop of vice versa.

Good deal.  These things were $50 when they first came out.   I really like E-cost.
