#5 Posted: 6/11/2010 1:10:42 PM Hard to recommend without knowing your age, fitness level, etc. or your longterm plans/goals with the running. Various training programs available @ www.runnersworld.com and maybe worth a read of Dr. George Sheehan's "Getting Fit"...
Good Luck. It's 90% mental. |

#6 Posted: 6/12/2010 11:25:38 PM Mice is spot on. It's all in the brain. Plenty of good reading out there as far as starting plans, nutrition, other exercizing to help, breathing, and proper stretching.
Love to run. Furthest I ever got to was 10 miles a day and ran 16 miles a handful of times. Can't wait for this goofy back to get fixed so I can do it again. It's addicting for brain food to run, and I haven't in 2+ years now.
Grrr.....

#7 Posted: 8/10/2010 5:50:35 PM Late joining, but if you're still looking google the Couch to 5k plan. It's incredible--got me going from not running at all (and not even exercising because of an injury) to doing 5k and then ultimately 10k multiple times a week. |

#8 Posted: 8/15/2010 11:15:59 AM currently running 25-30miles a week now. 5k is Sept 26th. 10k in late Oct. I am running 3 to 4miles with relative ease now but that 5th mile is a girl. i will run my week like this.....
2.5m, 3m, 4m, 5m, OFF DAY, 3m, 4m and repeat.
I don't want to kill my legs so I throw a few short days in there. been going 3 weeks on this now and no problems. |

#9 Posted: 8/15/2010 7:48:19 PM The Runner's World training plans might be pretty good for you at the point that you are at. I think the couch to 5k training plan may be a bit too easy for you. Somewhere along the line you should switch out one of those 3-4 milers and do a real easy 6, even if there is a little walk involved. Endurance is a lot tougher to build than speed. |

Agreed, given that weekly mileage. One thing I would add to thedegenerate is to ease your mileage a bit the week before the race. Probably obvious, but don't underestimate racing on fresh legs. |
