Sunday's Super Bowl -- a 21-17 victory by the New York Giants over the New England Patriots in Indianapolis -- generated $93,899,840, with a house take of $5,064,470 or 5.4 percent.--http://www.lvrj.com/sports/super-bowl-xlvi-generates-94-million-in-betting-handle-138820124.html

Perhaps, late New England money did balance the sides for the books or even surpassed Giants money in the end. But books came up with the winners as usual.

Obviously, Nevada sportsbooks did much better on this Sunday over Feb. 2008, they lost ~$2.5 million when Giants upset Pats, 17-14.

What it would be like to see the books for the sportsbooks in this city. Wish they would have broken that down a little farther. I'm sure every casino has a spreadsheet what was lost on every individual play available.

This is just more fuel for the conspiracy theorist that the games are rigged. Even if Vegas would have lost the 2.5 million this year. I'm sure just shitty behind downton would have made that up through liquor/food rooms and so on.

While approximately 52 percent of bets were on the Giants, Nevada’s sports books were big winners on the over/under and on proposition bets, said RJ Bell, the founder of Las Vegas-based handicapping information website Pregame.com.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-02-07/super-bowl-wagers-total-93-9-million-at-nevada-s-sports-books-state-says.html

More indepth read on the above Bloomberg's news. It seems 52% of bets were on Giants and majority was betting on Over 54. Of course, books always made much more out the props which always have higher vigorish.

Yeah, the ridiculous juice on the prop bets probably more than balanced out the slight public lean towards NY.  Read that on SB Sunday the MGM took in huge amounts of Pats money at -2.5

what this doesn't discuss is:

NYG Future Bets

thats the key in the whole thing.  They may have done ok in the game itself, but I don't think I've heard anything about how much they lost paying out all those big future bets.

But think how many Futures bets on the Packers, Saints, Pats, Steelers, Ravens, Chargers, Jets, Cowboys and Eagles lost! That more than makes up for their payouts on the Giants. Bank on it.

Pats who were #1 seed in AFC, coupled with Brady bunch and "best coach" Bill Belichick mystic, surely could suck in tons of money.

Patriots are the second most favorite team, only behind Packers, to win SB next season at 7-1 on Bodog. New England always favored to win SB season in season out.

good thread, Europa... was hoping someone would post this... just confirms that the popular belief that "everyone was on the Giants" was a myth... and more importantly, that the books weren't trying to "trap" everyone into betting the Giants, but were merely setting a line that would get the most even action possible...

not sure what it will take to convince people that sportsbooks aren't in the business of gambling... they are in the business of capitalizing on everyone else's gambling addictions, in the safest manner possible...

if given these two options...
  1. 100% chance of a 5% profit
  2. 10% chance of a 100% profit

Vegas opts for choice #1 every time...

Barnstorm already touched on this... you are not thinking of the simple mathematics here... for every futures bet taken on the Giants, there were 50 futures bets placed on other teams (no exaggeration)...

books NEVER lose money on futures bets, because the odds are skewed to ensure they can't possibly lose... if EVERYONE had started betting the Giants back in December, they would have adjusted the odds accordingly at some point, to stop the flow of money coming in on them...

of course, that did not happen... a handful of people raked in some money, but the books did not lose it... Giants futures payouts were paid by all the people who bet on the other 31 teams in the NFL...

this cracks me up!  people will never learn...

first of all, the team that loses the Super Bowl historically falls on it's face the following season... the Pats will get nowhere near the Super Bowl... i wish i could find odds on them not making the playoffs, cuz i would put all of my winnings from these playoffs on THAT proposition...

secondly, the Packers and the Pats are still both fatally flawed... their defenses both suck, so unless they completely retool, neither of these teams has any business being favored to win the Super Bowl...

thirdly... the Giants should be the favorites to win the Super Bowl... they have the most clutch QB in the NFL, operating with the best WR corps in the NFL and the best DL in the NFL... not to mention they have a shitload of confidence... this is the team to beat next year, i assure you!

completely idiotic that people believe the Pats and Packers are the front-runners... Pats have only a slightly better chance of winning the Super Bowl than me and 21 of my buddies...

Based on the 2012 NFL schedule of strength, Pats have the easiest schedule, followed by the Packers.

http://www.bloggingtheboys.com/2012/1/3/2676144/early-look-2012-nfl-strength-of-schedule-cowboys-giants-eagles

And Pats and Packers will likely excel under such favorable schedule in 2012. Life isn't all that fair oftentimes, so is sport. And Giants, like this season, will have a very tough 2012 schedule.

Don't be ridiculous, have you checked out their schedule? They're easily making the playoffs.

They are a good deep threat receiver, and playmaker on defense to going back to the Super Bowl.

Ice4blood, books do offer props of teams NOT making the playoffs, you would get pretty good odds for Pats not to make them next year, but they live in a divison with the Bills, Dolphins and Jets.  I am a Jets fan, but the team is a mess and certainly Pats could sleepwalk (like they did this year) to the playoffs, esp. with the easy schedule.  Of course, getting to the Super Bowl, will be harder, you would think they would get lots of competition to get there from Houston, Baltimore, and Pittsburgh, if these teams are healthy.

S.O.S. ratings prior to the start of the season generally are not very accurate... they can't account for teams that do dramatic turn arounds... i would certainly consider betting against the Pats to win the AFC East... Dolphins will be much better, and i think they will win the division... also, people never seem to recognize how severe the dropoff is for the SB loser from the previous season...

Pats might make the playoffs, but i'd say they are a virtual certainty to lose the first game of the playoffs...

it is odd that the two #1 seeds would have the easiest schedules... the formula that creates schedules is designed to do the opposite... regardless, neither the Pats nor the Packers will win the Super Bowl next year if they don't retool their defenses... actually, Pats won't win it regardless...
