Where the action is: Late NCAA tournament line moves

Mar 21, 2013 |
The NCAA tournament is just about an hour away from tipping off with 32 exciting matchups on Thursday’s slate. Books have been flooded with basketball bets, quickly adjusting their spreads and totals.

We take a look at the most notable line moves in the hours before March Madness ensues:

Michigan State Spartans vs. Valparaiso Crusaders – Open: 127, Move: 128, Move: 126.5

The total for this No. 3 versus No. 14 Midwest matchup has been up and down since post, with the most recent move pushing the number to 126.5 points.

The spread has also gone two different directions. Some books have jumped MSU to -11 while others have Valpo set as a 10-point pup. According to CarbonSports.ag, 70 percent of spread action is on the Spartans.

North Carolina A&T Aggies vs. Louisville Cardinals – Open: -26, Move: -26.5

The No. 1 overall seed is drawing action from public bettors, tagging on some extra chalk for its first game of the tournament. According to oddsmakers at CarbonSports.ag, 64 percent of bets are on Louisville.

South Dakota State Jackrabbits vs. Michigan Wolverines
– Open: -12, Move -11

South Dakota State has been tabbed as a potential Cinderella and bettors are buying into the No. 13 Jackrabbits versus No. 4 Michigan in the South Regional. South Dakota State has the offensive chops (73.9 points per game) to hang with the Wolverines scoring attack (75.2 points per game).

The total has jumped two points, from 138.5 to 140.5, since post. About 69 percent of bets are on SDSU +11 and 84 pecent of totals action is on the over.

St. Mary’s Gaels vs. Memphis Tigers – Open: 138, Move: 140

The Tigers are one of the most athletic and raw teams in the NCAA and take on a Gaels team coming off a win in the play-in game. St. Mary’s can fill up the hoop, averaging 75.2 points per game. It’s no surprise bettors are pushing this number up. According to oddsmakers, about 73 percent of totals wagers have been on the over.

Davidson Wildcats vs. Marquette Golden Eagles – Open: -3.5, Move: -3, Move: -4.5

Early sharp money jumped on Davidson and brought the spread as low as Marquette -3. However, the No. 3 seed is drawing action from public bettors and some books have moved this spread as high as -4.5, which opens up a chance for a middle if the Golden Eagles win by exactly four points.

Oregon Ducks vs. Oklahoma State Cowboys
– Open: 135, Move: 134.5, Move: 135.5

Underdog bettors were drawn to Oregon earlier in the week but now the biggest move has been total, which dropped to 134.5 after opening but shot up to 135.5 Thursday. The teams have a combined 23-28 over/under record on the year and action on the total is split, according to oddsmakers.
