Opposites attracting winners: A's over, ChiSox under

Apr 25, 2013 |
Two American League teams are hitting home runs for bettors, but doing it in completely different ways.

Here's a look at the best over and under team early in this MLB season:

(All stats are going into Friday's action)

Oakland Athletics over 19-4

The Athletics are putting a new spin on Moneyball. The A's are first in baseball in runs scored (126, 5.5 per game), fifth in hits (199) and second in OPS (.773). Combine this with a pitching staff with a 21st-ranked combined 4.21 ERA and opponent batting average of .261, this has been leading to lots of high scoring games. Oakland has seen three totals of 8.5 this season and none above.

Any $100 bettor would be up $1,426.13 if they picked the over for each of the A's 23 games.

Tommy Milone will start for Oakland against the Orioles' Wei-Yin Chen on Friday. Milone has a 3-1 record with a 4.26 for the Athletics, and Chen has a 1-2 record with a 3.38 ERA. The A's are -116 and the total is 7.5.

Chicago White Sox under 15-4-2

The White Sox are almost as successful for bettors, but are producing money in different ways. Chicago has the fifth-best ERA in the majors (3.20) and fourth in opponent batting average (.226). But the Chi Sox can't hit. They rank 26th in baseball in runs scored with 71 (3.4 per game) and 28th in OPS (.657). Chicago has seen two totals of seven twice, and none at 6.5 or under.

Any $100 bettor would be up $1,089.08 if they picked the under for each of the 21 White Sox games.

Jake Peavy will take the mound for Chicago on Friday against Tampa Bay's Roberto Hernandez. Peavy is 2-1 in four starts with a 3.20 ERA. Hernandez is 1-3 in four starts for the struggling Rays with a 4.74 ERA. The White Sox are -138 and the total is 7.5.
