Sizing up college football totals is a two-way street: Offense and defense.

After three weeks of action, bettors know which teams can score and which ones can’t stop anyone from scoring. And sometimes, those are the same teams.

Here are four programs that have the scoreboard operators putting in overtime and total bettors drooling with their powerful offenses and porous defenses:

Oklahoma State Cowboys (2-0 over/under)

The Cowboys are averaging a silly 62.3 points and 686.7 yards per game through the first three weeks of the season, thanks in part to the 84 points hung on FCS Savannah State in Week 1. While there was no total posted for that game, chances are OSU would have singlehandedly topped it.

Helping Over backers cash in on the Cowboys is a soft defense that has allowed 27.7 points per outing and sits dead last in the Big 12. Oklahoma State showed a bit more bite on that side of the ball against UL Lafayette and welcomed defensive coordinator Bill Young back after he missed the first two games due to health issues. It has a bye week to strengthen up the stop unit before taking on Texas on Sept. 29.

Ball State Cardinals (3-0 over/under)

Boom goes the dynamite for Ball State bettors backing the over. The Cardinals have topped the number in their first three games, giving up an average of 39 points in that span – 111th in the nation. They’ve countered with an average of 35 points of their own, thanks to the best rushing attack in the MAC (262.33 yards per game).

They’re the fifth worst team against the pass with opponents throwing for 327 yards per Saturday, and they gave up 423 passing yards to Indiana on Saturday. Ball State hosts South Florida and electric QB B.J. Daniels, who is looking for a breakout in Week 4 after a three-INT effort versus Rutgers.

Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (2-0 over/under)

The Bulldogs could have easily been 3-0 over/under if their opener versus Texas A&M wasn’t postponed due to Hurricane Isaac. Louisiana Tech is pounding the football down its opponents' throats, rushing for 289 yards a game (ninth in the country), while allowing foes to do the same to them.

The Bulldogs are giving up an average of 43 points on 508 yards to start the year, bleeding yardage in the secondary. Louisiana Tech has been bombed for an average of 365 yards through the air in games against Houston and Rice. It takes on Illinois and Virginia on the road the next two weeks.

Akron Zips (2-0 over/under)

The Zips have a gunslinger in QB Dalton Williams, who has passed for more than 1,000 yards in his first three games. Akron is fourth in the country in passing and 26th in scoring, posting 39.3 points an outing. That number is puffed up a bit after the Zips smacked FCS Morgan State 66-6 this past weekend.

The other side of the ball is a different story. Akron is allowing 34.3 points per game – a number again skewed by their meeting with Morgan State –and is being bullied for 181.67 yards on the ground. The Zips are in Knoxville facing the Vols this week. Tennessee has played over in its two lined games this season.
