Monday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers

Streaking

Yu Darvish, Texas Rangers – 3-0, 2.42 ERA

Darvish has settled into MLB life well following a tough big-league debut. He has allowed just two runs over his last 24 innings of work and just blanked the Yankees over 8 1/3 innings in his last outing, striking out 10 in the process. The Blue Jays were rumored to be major players in the Darvish sweepstakes before he landed with the Rangers.

Jeremy Hellickson, Tampa Bay Rays – 3-0, 2.84 ERA

Hellickson hasn’t been dominant by any means with 14 strikeouts compared to 12 walks in 25 1/3 innings pitched, but he is getting big outs when he needs them. He held the Angels to a solo homer in six innings of work in his last start and also worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the second inning.

Slumping

Chris Volstad, Chicago Cubs – 0-3, 6.14 ERA

Volstad hasn’t won a game since July 10 and just gave up six hits and four earned runs in six innings of work in a loss to St. Louis. The good news is he did sit down the Cardinals in order in four of those six innings, so maybe he’s getting on the right track. The 6-foot-8 righty has walked only four batters this season.

Nick Blackburn, Minnesota Twins – 0-2, 7.53

Blackburn missed a start with a shoulder issue and then was drilled by the Red Sox in his first start back in the rotation. Boston smacked him for five runs over just three innings. Blackburn was originally scheduled to take the ball Sunday, but the team decided to push him back a day. He has allowed 20 hits in 14 1/3 innings this year.
