Pick 'n' roll: Friday's best NBA bets

Portland Trail Blazers at Oklahoma City Thunder odds provided by logans

Kenny “The Jet” Smith perfectly broke down the current state of the Thunder and the team’s win-with-offense mentality.

“They are just like your girlfriend, Chuck,” Smith said to TNT co-host Charles Barkley, “they look pretty, but no brains.”

And it’s pretty hard to argue with The Jet. The Thunder, the pick by many teams to finish second in the Western Conference and challenge the two-time defending champion Lakers, is sloppy at best on defense. Oklahoma City is 22nd in the league in points allowed (103.9), 28th in opponents field goal percentage (48.1) and 27th in opponents three-point percentage (40.4).

Combine those lack-luster numbers, along with an offense that is among the more dynamic in the league, and you have a recipe which has led to the team’s 6-1 mark against the total this season. Kevin Durant is averaging a phenomenal 28.1 points per game and Russell Westbrook, the team’s scoring point, averages 7.9 assists per night.

"This is not us," Durant said. "This is not our team. We're a lockdown defending team."

So far this season, they aren’t.

Pick: Over

New York Knicks at Minnesota Timberwolves (+3, 213) odds provided by logans

Don’t call the Knicks road warriors. But the team isn’t exactly road kill either.

The Knicks have split four road games this season and looked more than respectable in all but one. New York won outright as an underdog in Chicago and Toronto and then lost a nail-bitter to Boston, 105-101, but covered the spread in Massachusetts.

"We are playing well, we really are," New York forward Amar’e Stoudemire said. "We're doing a good job defensively. That's the most important factor for us right now. Our offensive is going to work itself out. Guys are slowly getting into their rhythm out there. It seems to be playing well for us."

Meantime the Timberwolves have been a punching bag for the rest of the league, going 2-7 SU this season and just 3-6 ATS. The biggest problem for this team is easy – it’s playing some of the worst defense in the league. Minnesota is yielding nearly 110 points per game, the second-worst total in the game, and is allowing opponents to shoot a whopping 47 percent from the floor.

In three home games this year, the team is a mediocre 1-2 and has given up more than 112 points in two of those losses.

Pick
: Knicks

Timberwolves have looked mighty impressive last 2 games. They are really scrappy and have many decent up and comers. I'd hate to bet against them at home. BOL papguns1

Early NBA I like ATL-3, NY KNICKS UNDER 216.5, and OKC-2.5. Play of the Month: Buffalo-3 in football game tonight. They are a much better team than their rfecord. As usual, GLTA

last thing on my pick, which is now indiana -3 in some circles cause everyone's betting houston. neither teams plays defense. so the over's nice in this one. and indiana just posted 144 points on denver. 122-116 indiana. they might be the golden state warriors of the east with all the scoring.

atlanta historically takes the hawks at home. utah's had to expend a lot of energy in their past two games. i like atlanta. wouldnt' bet it; cause i didn't. good like atlanta players. hell, good luck utah players.

that minnesota/knicks game has generated a lot of interest. yes, the knicks should take them. but the knicks haven't looked good for a couple of games. minnesota really did look good against the flat lakers and the overwhelming favorites (-9.5) sacto kings. that's a tough game to call. good luck to you knick fans. GREAT ANALYSIS fresh4lyph. a lot depends on gallinari. as he goes so do the knicks; cause amare's penetration frees him, chandler, bill walker, and tony douglass. they hit their threes they win going away. the whole world likes houston. i hope they're wrong. tomorrow's another day!

the one thing that scares me about the T-Wolves is that Beasley is their feature guy... Beasley is a bum, he makes bad decisions... he doesn't really have a knock down jumper... he makes stupid fouls/passes/plays... I just don't like this guy as a player I think he has under-delivered since he came in the league. Coincidently I'm not that big on Amarie right now either but he should be able to dominate this kid Beasely. The Knicks did look good earlier because there 3's were falling and we all know that is not a definitive stradegy for winning consistently in this league. I like Raymond Felton and Toni Douglass/ Wilson Chandler off the bench. Galo I like too believe it or not, I always like to see him get going... I think the Knicks have too many players for the T-wolves to contend with as long as they show up... You think Beasley is going to score 45 again? I gotta go with Knicks avenging a poor performance well rested on their first game of a road trip.

ATL - 3 vs Utah and OKC -2.5 vs Port. Look for ATL to run and gun their way to a 10pt victory and OKC will lock down defensively and get enough offense from Durant and Westbrook.

I was thinking Hawks in this... but they have not covered nor impressed this year at home without there starting 3 and a new coach. Coaching is crucial in this league especially when games are tight down the end and you would have to give that edge to Jazz in a landslide; On the other hand, Jazz are in there 3rd game of a road trip (4 seams to be the breaker ie: Denver @ Pacers, GS @ Bulls last night) But Jazz should be playing inspired basketball with their last 2 performances and has Hawks impressed anyone yet? More so on the road then at home, but everything changes and nothing stays the same... I'm going to wait before I make this pick

hey kaboon. i'm up now on the west coast. your memory serves you well. i looked that streak up. they could pull that off. at the time prior to the 22 game winning streak they were 20-20. right now they're 1-6. yao ming played in the first 12 games of the streak and mcgrady played in the final 21 games of the streak. what we remember is that yoa was out and they won. just looked it up. but i'd forgotten that. i really like indiana. but one never knows. that i admit. the boston win last night was very gratifying!

glad you asked, kaboons. my girlfriend is waiting for me to come back to bed. no, she's not one of these pin-ups. i tell the truth. she makes me laugh, though, like this knicks bravado. i like indiana. they just clocked denver (who beat the lakers). the history tells us indiana. the collison pick-up told us indiana would be on the up. dunleavy being healthy is a shock. hibbert is totally on the rise. they've got the all-star granger. and, oops, hansborough, if one looks deeper, had an excellent game against denver and could be a looming x-factor in their future. indiana's a nice team. still don't play defense. i think they're gonna take down houston. oh, houston-- i thought they'd be good. aaron brooks is out and they've got this kid out of wake forrest running the show who's not too impressive. they're 1-6 and just lost to the wizards. hm. let's look at that. plu, the line started out at 4.5 and everyone's betting houston. that should be hint. indiana's the only play on the board to me. i did consider the home dog in minnesota. they're playing well the last two games. new york is not playing well the last two games. oops she's gonna dump me. good luck eveyrone.
