Ice picks: Monday’s best NHL bet

Pittsburgh Penguins at Washington Capitals (-120, 5.5) odds provided by betED

Who would have thought that a no-name goalie would steal the show in Game 1 of a seven-game series involving the NHL’s biggest stars?

Capitals netminder Simeon Varlamov pulled off a miraculous save with the score tied 2-2 with the Penguins threatening to take the lead. Pens captain Sidney Crosby had an open net to shoot at, but Varlamov somehow got his stick back in time to stop the puck from crossing the goal line.

“You don’t like to waste an open net like that,” Crosby told reporters after the loss. “You wind up losing the game 3-2, look back and say what if…”

Pittsburgh still has many reasons to feel good about its Game 1 performance. The club outshot Washington 36-26 and took just two penalties against a skilled set of forwards.

“I’m sure if we keep getting 40 shots a game,” Pittsburgh’s Maxime Talbot said, “we’ll like the result.”

For that to happen, the Pens will have to score more with the man advantage. They went 0-for-5 on Saturday and haven’t scored a power play marker in any of their last five games.

“It’s a one-goal game, and the [Washington] special teams beat us, 1-0,” Pens defenseman Brooks Orpik said. “The story, at the end of the day, is that their power play got one, and ours didn’t.”

Expect Crosby and Company to come out on top Monday sending the series back to Pittsburgh tied 1-1.

Pick: Pittsburgh

Oh geeeez. Now a Hat Trick for the Great 8. That boy has some mad skills! Up north to Pittsburgh they go down 0-2. Super Mario better give his boys a good locker room speech before Game #3.

HeyLou, that was funny about Colon. He sure is a big boy (like CC). And good $ strategy there too. Although as DDH knows, in baseball I do not play Run Lines on the faves ( usually don't play PL in hockey either, but thought it was smart yesterday since Boston had beaten Carolina every game by more than a goal). But instead I play a 2-team ML parlay (like today with KC and T.BAY). Too many heartbreaking beats in the past for me, where the fave only wins by one run. This year I told myself I would not play any RL faves in baseball and I am sticking to it. If I lose a parlay, so be it. But if I had two faves at -200 or higher, and I split and go 1-1, I would lose $ anyway. But your way is smart too (maybe even smarter than me), since sometimes you get the Fave at + money on the RL. Well, this game is going as planned for me tied at 2-2 after two periods. Hope the Pens pull this one out!

I 'M GLAD LEEK3 YOU AGREE WITH ME ON BETTING THE g.l.-1.5 + the same with the RL in bases. I think of course we will take some tough beats espically in baseball with teams bullpen giving up late runs + losing laying 1.5 runs. That said the $ saved by not laying -50+ higher on those favorites is the way 2 go. I try an open up 2 team parlays with those big dogs then close them later on with a strong play. So many people love 2 lay lumber on this site an very few talk about $ mangerment which is the biggest key 2 having a winning season in betting. I like W SOX +65 GRIENKE DUE 2 LOSE A GAME + COLON IS PITCHING GREAT NOW. WILL BE LOOKING 2 FADE HIM SOON WHEN HIS SUMMER FAT COMES IN + HIS ARM GETS TRIED FROM SHOVELING FOOD DOWN HIS MOUTH BUT KNOW HE 'S A LIVE DOG LOL

Yes DDH, I made the Round 2 Series plays and I posted them here for the world to see, only to get made fun of for taking all the dogs = Pens, Canes, Hawks and Ducks! These Series are not over by any means, but I am feeling great about my Series plays. If I win only 2 of them, I still make money. And the Ducks were +240 just like they were against the Sharks when I had them there. Hopefully I will get the last laugh on those dog picks here in Round #2. And I'm trying to get my buddy (a lifelong Wings fan) who lives in D.C. now, to fly out here for a Wings/DUCKS game up the interstate in Anaheim. I doubt he will do it though. Then my brother wants me to fly back to Chicago (his team) to see the Hawks at the U.C., but I told him I wanted to wait until the Conference Finals. Oh well, we shall see...........

Good Luck tonight DDH, glad to see you back here. Although sorry you missed yesterday's action since I imagine you woulda played the Ducks (since you and I seem to be the only ones playing the Ducks here in the playoffs). And hey JohnnySweet, I just posted on the MLB page. I ended up laying off that Over at Yankee Stadium, but I added the Angels. I was gonna send you a private message but you haven't accepted me as a friend yet, so I could not. Time to go get my Penguins' t-shirt on for the game. Enjoy the Game 2 battle everyone!

I know it's almost gametime, but Lee, i like the over in the Red Sox game. Most of the games between the 2 go over anyhow.. and now that there is a hitters park in NY.. well, Lester doesn't usually pitch that great against NY. And Hughes might have started ok, but that won't last.. there is a reason the line is 10. That was one of my leans today. I also took Pirates and Penguins.. GL

took in in the shorts with BOSTON last night . . . but if you watched the game you saw them really dominant from the get-go. they just couldn't get a goal . . . Cam Ward is phenomenol!! I would like to take the PENS tonight but there is not much value there . . . need to think about this one a little more . . .

Look at all the round 2 game 2 NHL games.....All the dogs that lost in game 1 ALL WON GAME 2 ( Carolina, Anaheim and Chicago black hawks) They all won Game 2 Outright after losing Game 1 on the road never mind +1.5 in Game 2's.... So I expect The +1.5 to be a solid pick for the Pens tonight... They probably would continue that trend and even Win the game outright as well !!!!!

I like both your picks Lee.. i think Pitt evens the series and it goes over the 5.5 Taking the home favorite is NOT always the smart thing in hockey.. it's not like basketball and football where the crowd and other factors can make a difference.

Hit with the Canes on the ML, and the Ducks on the ML and over 5.5 Liking the Pens pick on the puckline.. big game tonight out of Crosby and more importantly Fleury.. might be worth a look on the under.. I agree with Turk.. liking a 4-1 win

LeeK, I like both of your picks for Monday. The only thing that bothers me are the head to head treads. Pitt has not done well in or against Washington in general. My take is that Pitt is a different team since Fluery got healthy. Do you know how many games he was out against the Caps? Feedback appreciated.

Yesterday was a big wake-up call to those who simply play the home team favorites on the ML in the NHL Playoffs. I'm not trying to gloat, but I did win 2 out of 3 yesterday hitting the +200 Ducks and also the Under 5 (+110) in the Bruins/Hurricanes, for +2.1 units. I lost the Bruins -1.5 but at least I didn't have to lay any big juice. And wow, Cam Ward basically matched his performance in Game #2 of the 1st Round vs. the Devils, but even better there against the Bruins in Game 2 of that series, earning the big shutout. On Monday, I 100% agree with the Covers pick. I already had it placed before they posted and I am sticking with the Penguins even though I lost on them in Game 1. I think the Pens are the more well rounded team. Yes, I think A.O. is the best scorer in the league, and he'll get his shots off as usual, but he doesn't play "team" hockey, and the Pens are a more complete team. I will hope that the theme of the road team winning Game #2 continues. And I just don't trust the 21 year old Russian rookie in net for the Caps, when he only played in 6 regular season games. He's been great so far in the playoffs, but for how long can this keep up? Marc-Andre Fleury, on the other hand, has the experience from last year under his belt (okay, he wears suspenders, not a belt). And I may have gotten lucky there in Game #1 with my Under winner, but I am going with the OVER 5.5 here in Game #2. Anything can happen, but I have a hunch this one goes Over the 5.5 total. Pittsburgh even vs WASHINGTON, for 2 units. OVER 5.5 (-120) CAPITALS vs Penguins, for 1 unit.
