Ice picks: Thursday's best NHL bets

New Jersey vs. New York Rangers (-140, 5)

Goalie rivalries can be strange. The one between Jersey’s Martin Brodeur and New York’s Henrik Lundqvist just got stranger.

Brodeur was recently quoted in Sports Illustrated as saying, “The way he plays is not something I like too much. Lundqvist is weird."

Maybe Brodeur just finds it weird that another goalie is destroying him in head-to-head matchups. According to a report in the New York Post, Lundvist is 11-2-3 in his career against Brodeur. Lundqvist has also allowed only five goals in six Ranger wins over New Jersey this year.

With these two goalies out to show one another up tonight and the Rangers leading scorer Scott Gomez out, we could see another tight game.

Sidney Crosby returns for the Pens tonight after missing 28 of the last 31 games. Easy win for the Penguins right? Whoa! Look at that chalk, though. Maybe that price is a little steep.

The puckline might be worth a gamble considering goalie Rick DiPietro is gone for the season along with a laundry list of other Islanders. The Isles also beat the Pens 4-1 Monday night and Pittsburgh can’t be too happy about it.

The Devils will not go far at all in the playoffs! they just dont have the depth i believe on the defensive blueline. Brodeour can only do soo much between the pipes.

No doubt Scooter, Willie Nelson RULES. Enjoy the show. 4 games knotted up right now, it'll be interesting to see how it all plays out. Looks like we can stick a fork in the Leafs, good thing I stayed away. I'll still be on SJS & PHX for the nightcap. Timw will tell. LOL Tommy T, I can't fault you for going against me. Even I want to go against me. I think the moral here is that picking towards the tail end of the season adds an extra element of difficulty to it. At least one of us will win though, and I'll happily take that over both of us losing (like last night). Cheers and BOL the rest of the way dude.

rangers have shot at season sweep over devils. are 6-0 with 2 games to go. habs won bruins series 8-0-1 and philly/mtl series 4-0. but if rangers lose they may drop into 7th or 8th or right out of playoffs despite a winning record vs. montreal too.

Hey boys!! Go leafs, I won't touch that one but they've ruined their shot at a top five pick so they may as well shoot for the playoffs. This is probably the only Leaf playoff style hockey I'll see for a couple more years so I better enjoy. Anyways onto betting I'm liking NYI @ Pitt- Lets see Crosby is back, they want revenge, they are fighting for the Eastern conference top seed. Looks like enough to convince me. NJ @ NYR- NYR need the victory tonight to tie up NJ in the points race. Lundqvist is something like 11-2-3 against Brodeur in his career. However I know Brodeur can steal any game. Under(5.5)

But yeah, on to business...Unit it was indeed suckin last night, but like I said, I was right there with ya...hell I am cold as a Danish summer right now too so I am gonna do something totally different tonight. I'm takin FLA over Trash tonight! Yes yes, I know, my RULE...wager against the ATL and lose...but dammit...this game FLA want and SO TRUE that ATL has totally been idle for a week, even when playing!!! Now for you others who know me here, maybe the thing to do is indeed take ATL, cause I am cold right now but me....NAW DUDE, FLA (ML) thats my reality on that game tonight. Parlays have been draining my capital...goin back to singles again and another Diggla for the night is ATL/FLA to go to OT. So those two plus WAS (ML) and maybe a parlay with ATL/FLA and NYR/NJ both to go to OT...nice payout in this one...but GAMBLING, you know...there'll be time enough for counting when the dealin's done...HEY UNIT!!! Boss gimme 2 tix to Willie Nelson 9th row center for my 40th...I'm thinkin thats something you'll appriciate.... B!!!!O!!!!!L!!!!A!!!!!

Sounds good gbear, I too was contemplating whether that ATL/FLA game will go down to the SO. I may have to stay clear of that game all together, or change my mind and throw an ML bet on some 3 to 4-teamer. BOL Ya the CAPS could definitely give MTL a run for their money. It'd be a great match, that's why I'd like to see it. First round matches aren't usually *THAT* entertaining. Time will tell. BOL today. Cheers friend.

g'day guys,..UNIT..nice write up as usual...Yes gbear,I agree with the NJ/NYR SO.They've had 4 SO's and 1 OT in their last 9 games. NYR's last game was in OT and the game before that a SO. A similar situation as lastnights game with LA/ANA and they ended up in a SO.

I want Montreal to be the 1 seed IF AND ONLY IF Washington does not get the 8th seed. They are the only team I don't want to see Montreal play in the first round.

UNIT-G, Nice write up there,I think your spot on with every single pick!Only side note would be the NJD/NYR and ATL/FLA going to the shootout to decide both tilts.I'm also leaning towards the Dallas/SJ game going the same way given the defensive style of both clubs and the low scoring nature of San Jose.

Well said dfk, BUF is a dangerous club. And the Sens net minders aren't exactly what you'd call "dominant". Exactly why that game is "no action" for me. BOL however. Cheers.

Analysis:

Boston swept the Tuesday doubleheader over Tampa Bay as it allowed just two runs total to make it four straight wins at home. I expect that to come to an end tonight however despite the recent dominance over the Rays.

Ryan Dempster has tossed four straight quality outings but Boston has only two wins to show for it and that has been the story all season. His inconsistency has been an issue which is one of the main reasons the Red Sox are just 6-8 in his 14 starts despite giving him an average of 5.0 rpg. They have actually given him more runs at home but he is just 3-5 with Boston going 4-6 in those 10 starts. The Rays are struggling not only against Boston but against everyone it seems of late as they are just 2-8 over their last 10 games. The offense has been the problem most recently as Tampa Bay has scored three runs or less in six of its last seven games but I see a breakout here behind Jeremy Hellickson. The Rays have given him 5.9 rpg this season of support and that is a big reason they are 7-7 in his 14 starts despite his 5.67 ERA. He has been all over the place and he is coming off a game where he allowed eight runs against Kansas City. The last time he allowed eight runs in an outing, he bounced back with a quality performance in his next start. He has allowed three runs or less in nine of his last 10 starts against Boston and the Rays are 4-1 in his last five starts against teams with a winning record. Play (967) Tampa Bay Rays
