Pick ‘n’ roll: Thursday’s best NBA bets

Miami Heat at Houston Rockets (-11, 188 ½)

These teams are polar opposites. The Heat have dropped nine straight contests and are 23.5 games off the pace at the bottom of the NBA Southeast, while Houston has won nine straight and is just four games back in the NBA Southwest.

There is also major disparity between how each team is doing against the spread. Miami has covered just twice on its current losing streak, while the Rockets have won against the spread in six of their last seven.

Houston has won and covered in two of its last three meetings against Miami and that trend is likely to continue when they meet on Thursday night.

Pick: Miami

San Antonio Spurs at Minnesota Timberwolves (+8, 179)

The Spurs won six of nine games on a difficult road trip ahead of the All-Star break, so Thursday’s road game in Minnesota won’t be too daunting for them. It also helps that Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili are ripping it up at the moment.

San Antonio’s big two have averaged 46.8 points and 9.2 rebounds over the last five games, including a massive 46-point performance from Ginobili in the win over Cleveland before the All-Star break.

The last time these teams met, it was Ginobili who did most of the damage. He had 22 points, five rebounds and three assists in a 105-88 Spurs win on Jan. 12. That was San Antonio’s third straight victory over the Wolves and the sixth time in the last seven meetings it covered the spread against them.

Pick: San Antonio

Seattle SuperSonics at Portland Trail Blazers (-7, 191)

The Sonics managed a home win against the Grizzlies in their first game after the break, despite persistent speculation about the future of the franchise and the absence of their star rookie.

Seattle has been rocked by rumors that the team could be moved to Oklahoma City in the coming months, something that’s bound to have an effect on the players. Meanwhile, one of their biggest stars, Kevin Durant, was sent home ahead of Tuesday’s game with a bout of the flu.

What all that means for Thursday’s clash in Portland is quite simple. Seattle is a franchise under pressure with a star player who is unlikely to be 100 percent, facing a team it has not won or covered against in its last two attempts.

Pick: Portland

Final thoughts: Pygmy_Twylyte says: 02/21/08 03:35PM Is anyone in here talking about tonight's games? I've been watching Tonk and Z-Arter for a few weeks. WhippingPost offers good advice, I can tell you have been around for a while also. You guys do a good job. If anyone sees a good reason to stay away from any of these let me know: Arizona LOSS Duquesne LOSS Michigan LOSS Denver LOSS I am having a real good year so far but will alwyas listen to any advice the forum can offer. Good luck tonight to everyone. Not trying to be harsh here but you certainly had a lot of negative things to say about Pack and others... I would have to strongly recommend to everyone on here to steer clear of this guy... 0-4 tonight and spreading negative vibes towards decent people is not going to cut it... Hopefully you can redeem yourself tomorrow and at least offer something of value... Guys I will be back on tomorrow afternoon.. Take care!

TREN200 says: 02/21/08 03:08PM Hey Guys.... just looked over the board and wanted to pass along a couple of spreads that look a little odd to me.... Dayton -1.5 at Lasalle .... Line set low for a reason... first glance would tempt me towards Dayton, but Lasalle actually leads Dayton in the A-10 standings by 1/2 a game... Lasalle coming off very impressive 90-89 road win at St. Joes as a 13 point dog.. Dayton has really struggled on the road losing last 4 SU and ATS... Gotta question Daytons morale at this point going 3-6 SU after a magical 14-1 start and #14 ranking in the polls... my early lean is towards LASALLE... Denver -3 VS Middle Tenn St.. Will respect Denver 9-1 at home and solid ATS record to date this season, but this game has that ole funny feelin to it... Line comes out at modest 1.5 and has doubled already to -3 thanks to the public hammering it... Deeper look will reveal that Middle Tenn St. just held their own vs Sun Belt leading Western Kentucky getting the ATS W, and beating South Alabama outright the game before that.. With 70% backing Denver in this spot I would be leary, and the fact that covers.com has that ATS article with the Denver player pictured on it's college page, makes me lean towards the road team playing good basketball right now... my early lean is MIDDLE TENNESSEE ST.. TREN200 says: 02/21/08 03:43PM Hey Guys... Here's another one.... Rhode Island -5 VS Umass... Once again respect Rhode Island home court record this year, but a deeper look shows some very sharp lines in which Rhode Island has not been able to cover, last one being the Xavier game in which the line moved 4 pts against them in what turned out to be an outright upset, thanks to good ole public money... Must question how Rhode Island will respond after deflating 1st home defeat of season to conference leading Xavier... This game has been very tight over the years, spoting a team over 5 points in this match up may be too many, dog has prevailed here more often than not... Umass only 1/2 game back of rival Rhode Island in A-10 standings.. would expect a tight one here leaning towards the points... Early lean UMASS +5 1/2 and dropping... TREN200 says: 02/21/08 06:46PM ok guys... not lovin the board tonight by any stretch here.. but I'm going to go with the following as my plays for this evening... South Alabama +6 Middle Tennessee St. + 3 1/2 Washington Huskies - 1 1/2 Hopefully this helps... will post later on tonight... Hey treshuevos333... I hope the information given today helped you out of your situation... I certainly can not guarantee every day will be this sweet but I always try my best to help out... There are some good people on here like Pack, Fasttrain, indrep, etc.. that are worth backing and taking advice from... I had almost a plus 14 unit day today and unlike teabag it was very real... Sometimes you just have to sit back and watch things develope on here... If a game looks just way too easy, with a seemingly low spread, and heavy betting on it from the public over 70% or better, it really can be useful... So many people hammered DENVER -1 1/2 that the line jumped to -3, I choose this spot and looked into it and the result was a winner in favor of Middle Tenn St., even got them at + 3 1/2... well just wanted to see how you made out, let me know... Hopefully the rest of the week is this good...

Pygmy is NOT teabag...confirmed by CT staff...it's an alias from someone who was banned for making repeated RACIST posts and comments over the past few weeks...he's jealous and mad that no one loves him like they do "dad"...it's all drama that no one here needs to engage in...Pygmy's very clever as a professional troll and there's no beating them at their own game...best to ignore 100% and just let his insignigicant posts wither away without the attention he desperately seeks...his ultimate goal is to get certain people boxed or banned, and his failed attempts in the past just upsets him even more with every passing day...this is the last time i will be referring to this PYG tonight...hope all my fellow trainsters are sitting on another winning night...depending on the Arizona game, we'll either be 3-2 or 2-3...all the best, tty tomorrow

standing ovation for Pygmy...managed to morph into the resident troll quite impressively...the picknroll has been graced with the presence of capordie...our lives have been truly blessed tonight...the alias inventor himself...the hall of famer...capordie...you truly are pathetic...rather than play nice with the fellow inmates you just need to cause problems wherever you go...you need to get a job in the casinos as a janitor, rather than continue losing your paychecks there every second weekend...you should go refill your meds tomorrow too...ALL ABOARD.........................

I also agree Ken, anyone who takes a play based on someone else simply saying so is an idiot Develop your own methods is my motto. Fuj Pack who are you talking to? Do you have a girlfriend? You and your "main forums". Is that where you spend the other half of your day? Explain for us adults in here - what is a "trainster"? Thanks!

Teabag aka Pygmy_Twylyte (another horse name I'm sure), seriously see a doctor. You have real problems that may be treatable with the right prescription.
