Chris Bassitt allowed one run in 6 1/3 innings and the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the visiting New York Yankees 3-1 Monday night in the opener of a three-game set.

Alejandro Kirk was 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI for the Blue Jays, who are 5-2 on their nine-game homestand.

The Yankees have lost two in a row for the first time this season.

Bassitt (2-2) gave up four hits and two walks with five strikeouts. The right-hander held the Yankees without a run over 14 2/3 innings across two starts against them last season.

Yankees right-hander Luis Gil (0-1) allowed three runs on three hits and walked seven in five innings. He struck out six.

The Yankees won two of three from the Blue Jays in New York April 5-7.

Gil survived walking the first two batters of the game with the help of a pickoff of Bo Bichette at first base to end the inning.

New York scored once in the second on successive one-out singles by Gleyber Torres, Alex Verdugo and Oswaldo Cabrera.

The Blue Jays answered with two runs in the second. Cavan Biggio doubled to lead off the inning and extend his hit streak to nine games before Kirk and Daulton Varsho walked to load the bases. One run scored when Isiah Kiner-Falefa walked. A wild pitch scored another run a batter later.

Toronto added a run in the third when Bichette singled, stole second and scored on Kirk's two-out double down the left field line.

Ron Marinaccio replaced Gil to start the sixth and threw two scoreless innings.

Bassitt struck out Torres to lead off the seventh before being replaced by Tim Mayza.

Former Yankee Chad Green pitched a perfect eighth for Toronto.

Yimi Garcia retired the side in order on three fly balls in the ninth to earn his second save of the season.

The Blue Jays activated catcher Danny Jansen (fractured right wrist) from the 10-day injured list Monday and optioned catcher Brian Serven to Triple-A Buffalo.

Jansen did not play Monday but is expected to start on Tuesday,
