It’s easy to look at Al Ahly SC’s schedule and not be certain how good they are. After all, beating sides named National Bank and Ceramica Cleopatra doesn’t really give many fans of the Club World Cup an idea of the talent level of the side.
But the Egyptian champions are no pushover, and Inter Miami will be in for a battle when they open the tournament on Saturday night.
Al Ahly is arguably the best team in Africa, despite falling in the CAF Champions League semifinals, and have the offensive weapons to cause real problems for Inter Miami’s defense.
Jose Riveiro will manage his first competitive match for the side after drawing 1-1 with Pachuca last weekend in a friendly, and his squad have been in the United States for two weeks now. They’re acclimated to the time change and the weather, and feature an attack spearheaded by Emam Ashour.
That said, it’s doubtful they’ve faced anyone as dangerous as Lionel Messi. Even with the superstar nearing the end of his legendary career, he’s still quite capable of moments of pure magic. He bagged a brace of both goals and assists in his last outing, a 5-1 win over Columbus that saw him involved in three goals inside the opening 25 minutes.
But the match yet again showed their defensive frailties, as the Herons failed to keep a clean sheet despite allowing just a single shot on goal. They’ve seen their net rippled in 10 consecutive outings, and they’re still dealing with multiple injuries at the back.
Eight of Miami’s last nine matches have seen both teams score and at least three goals put on the board. Had they found a goal against Orlando City, it would’ve been nine straight as the Lions scored three of their own.
While I don’t see Al Ahly repeating the six goals they scored against Pharco FC to end their domestic campaign, they’re a side poised to create chances. Add in the two difficult matches each side will encounter to close out the group, and both teams will be hoping for a result here.

Despite coming off injured at halftime in his last match, Oscar Ustari is expected to start in goal for Inter Miami. In his previous three starts, he was tested plenty but made 13 saves. He had at least four saves in all three of those contests, and getting three here shouldn’t be too difficult a feat to achieve.
