After dropping two straight games, the Dallas Stars look to get back on track with goaltender Jake Oettinger slated to take the crease. Making a strong case in the Vezina Trophy conversation, Oettinger has been terrific this season.

Through 32 appearances between the pipes, he is 19-6-4 with a .924 save percentage (SV%) and 2.28 goals against average (GAA). Based on his metrics, regression should not be an issue as Oettinger ranks sixth among starting goaltenders in goals saved above expected per 60 minutes (GSAx/60) at 5-on-5.

Entering this contest in particularly dominant form, he is 6-1-1 with a .939 SV% and 1.74 GAA over his last eight starts. This stellar play is likely to continue against the Vegas Golden Knights, a team he dominated last time out.

In his lone career start against the Golden Knights, Oettinger stopped 33 of 35 shots for a .943 SV% and 1.85 GAA en route to a 3-2 win. In front of the Stars’ netminder is a team that is competent on both ends of the ice, ranking in the top half of the league in both expected goals for per 60 minutes (xGF/60) and expected goals against per 60 minutes (xGA/60) at 5-on-5.

While Vegas also ranks nearly identical to Dallas in both of those metrics, the difference in this contest is found in net as rookie goaltender Logan Thompson is slated to start in the crease for the Golden Knights. Despite the tremendous start to his rookie campaign, regression has started to hit the young netminder recently, which is not shocking given his metrics.

Among starting goaltenders, Thompson ranks 20th in GSAx/60 at 5-on-5. He was on the losing end of the aforementioned meeting between these two clubs, a result that is likely to occur once again in what should be a great game.

Another big reason to back Dallas is the number of injuries that are piling up in Vegas. For Monday’s contest, they are expected to miss Mark Stone, William Carrier, Shea Theodore, Zach Whitecloud, and Daniil Mirmanov among others.

The Golden Knights are missing a ton of talent in this game, and most of it is defensive when you consider Stone’s importance as a two-way forward and the absence of three starting defensemen.

Keeping in mind that Thompson is currently in a regression period as his surface-level stats are starting to dip down to where his underlying metrics say he should be, the Stars should be able to take advantage and bury the biscuit often in this contest.

It is worth noting that Dallas’ Roope Hintz is questionable with an upper-body injury, and it is unclear at the time of writing whether he will travel with the team or not for this game. However, even if this key piece of the Stars’ offense misses the game, Vegas’ injuries are a greater concern given the amount of depth they are surrendering.

With the defensive injuries to Vegas and Thompson regressing between the pipes, I would lean towards the Over in this contest. However, I don't want to pull the trigger on the Over given that Oettinger is starting across the ice for Dallas.

Continuing his dominance from last year’s playoffs against the Flames, Oettinger is proving that he was not a one-hit-wonder in net. The future is bright for the Stars’ netminder, someone who will likely grab a Vezina Trophy or two over the next decade.
