Best NHL Player Prop Bets Today, April 22: Markstrom Sees Fair Share of Shots

The Hurricanes can generate shots with the best of them, and that means Devils goaltender Jacob Markstrom is in for another busy night in Game 2, per our NHL prop betting picks. Plus, a pair of props for Senators vs. Maple Leafs.

The second season is in full swing, and there are four more games and eight teams hitting the ice this Tuesday, April 22.

The Tampa Bay Lightning host the Florida Panthers in their series opener, while the New Jersey Devils, Ottawa Senators, and Minnesota Wild are all chasing a win in their respective Game 2s to head home with their series tied.

Here are my top NHL player props for tonight’s action.

Best NHL player prop bets for April 22

Jacob Markstrom Over 26.5 saves (-110 at Sports Interaction)

The Carolina Hurricanes registered 44 shots on 79 attempts in Game 1, and New Jersey Devils goalie Jacob Markstrom made 41 saves. Pucks on net is priority No. 1 for Carolina, and the Hurricanes are a 5-on-5 machine with sterling fancy stats.

After all, Carolina paced the league with a 59.2 Corsi For percentage and 55.7% shot share at 5-on-5 during the regular season. The Hurricanes are good on the surface, too, and averaged the second-most shots per game (31.7).

Markstrom is going to see oodles of rubber again tonight, and he’s rounding into form with a .912 save percentage across his latest six starts, and that includes being shelled for seven by the Boston Bruins in a meaningless mid-April contest.

Brady Tkachuk Over 3.5 shots (-115 at Sports Interaction)

Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk led the NHL in shots per 60 minutes and ranked third in attempts per 60 to also finish in the 99th percentile of forwards in shots on goal. He hit the net five times on 12 attempts during the series opener, and he registered four or more shots in 39 of 72 regular-season games.

The Toronto Maple Leafs were caved in at 5-on-5 once again Sunday and lost the possession battle with a 36.0 Corsi For percentage and 32.5% shot share. It's a trend that dates back to the regular season, and I expect Tkachuk will have plenty of shooting opportunities again in Game 2.

Anthony Stolarz Over 25.5 saves (-110 at Sports Interaction)

Toronto Maple Leafs No. 1 Anthony Stolarz stopped 31 of 33 shots in Game 1, and it was the fifth time in his past seven starts he had 26 or more. The Ottawa Senators were shorthanded for 7:33 of the series opener, too, and I’m not expecting them to be down a man that much tonight.

As a result, Ottawa should have more even-strength time, and the Senators dominated possession with a 64.0 Corsi For percentage and 67.5% shot share at 5-on-5 in Game 1. Ottawa also averaged the eighth-most shots per game (29.3), while Toronto allowed the eighth most (29.3) during the regular season.

Of course, Stolarz has also been next to automatic all season and paced the NHL with a .926 save percentage and 0.74 goals saved above average per 60 minutes.
