A pair of MVP hopefuls will meet tonight as two of the best will highlight a 14-game Saturday slate when Nathan MacKinnon and the Colorado Avalanche visit Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers in the nightcap.

With McDavid and MacKinnon almost certainly hitting the scoresheet tonight, which supporting contributor has the best NHL odds value to point in a game that could see eight or more goals?

I break down the matchup and offer my free NHL picks for Avalanche vs. Oilers for Saturday, March 16.

Avalanche vs Oilers odds

Avalanche vs Oilers predictions

Saturday night is going to be capped off with what is hopefully an epic battle between Connor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon.

MacKinnon currently leads the league with 115 points and is the Hart Trophy odds favourite, while McDavid is inching his way to the point lead thanks to his insane 39 points over 19 games since the All-Star break. The Oilers forward sits nine points back with five games in hand.

Both skaters know what this game means in terms of standings in the West as well as end-of-season hardware. This is a battle between the two best players in hockey who are also playing their best hockey of the season.

"I'm always motivated to go up against the league's best, and he would certainly fall into that category," McDavid said. "A bunch of them over there, Rantanen, Makar, Toews, they've got an elite group over there, and I love testing myself against those type of guys."

I can’t see a world where either skater is held off the scoresheet. MacKinnon is a very appetizing +120 for two-plus points, while McDavid is -120 for his Over 1.5 points. I wouldn’t say no to either, but I think there’s better value in the supporting characters, especially Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, who is even money for an assist.

RNH has three assists over his last two games and with Zach Hyman scoring at will, the top-line and PP1 forward has a great chance to set up a goal tonight.

I wouldn’t be surprised if McDavid had a high-volume shot game for the pass-first forward, which would increase RNH’s chance of picking up an assist.

Th Avalanche are also giving up 3.43 goals per game on the road, which ranks in the Bottom 10 of the league. Edmonton should flirt with four goals tonight.

My best bet: Ryan Nugent-Hopkins Over 0.5 assists (+100 at SIA)

Avalanche vs Oilers same-game parlay

Both teams to score three goals

Zach Hyman AGS

Nathan MacKinnon AGS

Let's see some offense in Edmonton tonight and hopefully a lot of it from the top lines. Hyman has been banging in goals all year and has 14 goals over his last 13 games, including a hat trick in his last game.

Nate Mac is a player who can get seven shots on goal and has been finding the back of the net of late, with at least one goal in seven of his last eight games.

Both teams have incredible make-up offenses, and no lead will be safe in this game.

Avalanche vs Oilers moneyline and Over/Under analysis

SIA opened the Oilers as -125 favorites, with the moneyline moving to -130 by noon today. The total opened at 6.5 but is hitting 7 across the board.

Today’s price is indicating a pick ‘em on neutral ice and it’s hard to argue that either team is better than the other heading into tonight.

The Avs are on a five-game winning streak following what MacKinnon called the team’s best win of the year Thursday in Vancouver. The two points have put Colorado into a first-place tie in the Central.

The Avs have dominated the head-to-head, winning eight of the last 10 taking 13 of a possible 14 points over the last seven meetings. Despite all the winning, the games have been close as four straight matchups have gone to overtime and six of the last 10. A tie tonight is paying +340, indicating a 22.7% probability, which is right around the league average rate.

Edmonton has played just as well and also has an MVP in McDavid, who has 39 points in 19 games since the All-Star break. The club is also 37-12-2 under new coach Kris Knoblauch.

These two clubs are identical in my opinion. Questionable in net, elite top-line scoring, and great special teams.

Although I like Colorado thanks to the price, the Over 7 at plus money is likely my stronger lean on a side or total. Both offenses have the talent to come back from any deficit, and even if Edmonton is leading 3-1 late, Colorado can tie it up in a hurry. The Avs are also not as tight of a team on the road as their at home, and goaltender Alex Georgiev has a GAA about one goal higher away from Ball Arena.

Ultimately, this is a game that will bring out the best of MacKinnon and McDavid and when they are motivated and performing at this insane level, they are going to impact the outcome. Seeing 110% from these two is going to make for must-watch TV and keeping either team Under three goals is going to be tough.

Both teams to score three goals is +135 and is a better option than the Over 7 at plus money. If this game is 3-3 after 60 minutes, I’d not be surprised.

Look for a lot of production from both top lines meaning points for contributors like Val Nichushkin and Nugent-Hopkins. Nichushkin for an assist is also something I like at +140.
