This Players Era Tournament should deliver us a feast of good matchups, and one of those comes this evening when Gonzaga meets Alabama.

The Crimson Tide enters this matchup with just one loss to the No. 1 team in the country, Purdue. Gonzaga is undefeated and has become an early contrarian pick for that “best team in the country” moniker.

My Alabama vs. Gonzaga predictions and college basketball picks for Monday, November 24 tell you why the Bulldogs will come out on top.

Gonzaga vs Alabama prediction

Gonzaga vs Alabama best bet: Gonzaga -4.5 (-110)

To reach the championship in this tournament, you basically need to go 2-0, and then factors like points scored, points allowed, and point differential (capped at +20) decide who advances.

As much as I hate that, it does introduce a useful wrinkle for my modeling, and it reinforces my best bet of Gonzaga -4.5.

Yes, there’s a very real “I just think the Gonzaga Bulldogs are the better basketball team” element here, but the matchup also tilts their way. The Zags' strengths line up almost perfectly with the Alabama Crimson Tide's weaknesses, and the reverse isn’t really true.

Gonzaga has an elite, balanced offense, but the key edge is on the defensive end: they’re excellent at the rim and in defending drives, cuts, and pick-and-pop actions. That’s exactly where Alabama’s offense wants to live.

Alabama will have some transition spurts, but Gonzaga is also outstanding in transition and on rebound-scramble, “hard-nosed” plays. That’s where Purdue really hurt Alabama, and Gonzaga can do the same with players like Graham Ike.

Both teams want to play fast, but I’d rather back the side that can still get stops in the halfcourt. Gonzaga is more complete there — there’s a reason they rank No. 1 nationally on Bart Torvik once preseason priors are stripped out.

With the Zags already rating a few points better by the underlying metrics, I see clear value here, as I projected this spread at -5.5.

Gonzaga vs Alabama same-game parlay

Despite Gonzaga’s defense being the difference in this matchup overall, the frantic pace and the Tide still very much being an elite offense will lead this game to go Over.

I added Ike to go Over his points total because of the multiple matchup advantages he has.
