Yankees vs A's Picks and Predictions: A's Hurlers Can't Handle NY Offense

Despite trying to escape an extended late-season rut, tonight's matchup with the Oakland A's should be a gift to the Yankees. NY should have no problems chasing Adrian Martinez en route to a comfortable victory — as our MLB betting picks break down.

After losing to the New York Yankees for two straight days, the Oakland Athletics got a 3-2 victory on Saturday night. Now the series finale is set for Sunday afternoon in Oakland.

Clarke Schmidt will try and get the win for the Yankees, who are trying to increase their lead in the AL East. The last-place A’s will try to play spoiler again for the second straight day. The two teams are starting pitchers that have limited starting pitching experience, so we'll be targeting the Over.

Yankees vs A's betting preview

Starting pitchers

Clarke Schmidt (5-2, 2.18 ERA): Schmidt is being pressed into service as a starter with the injuries to Luis Severino, and most recently Nestor Cortes. The right-hander got his first start in the majors on June 16 and he allowed one hit in three innings. The rest of his work has been in the Yankees’ bullpen, mostly as a middle reliever. His most recent appearance was against the New York Mets, taking over for starter Frankie Montas in the fifth. He threw three innings of shutout ball, allowing just three hits.

Adrian Martinez (2-3, 6.08 ERA): Martinez has bounced from the A’s to Triple-A Las Vegas and back again a few times this season. He got the start over Zach Logue, who manager Mark Kotsay said will be moved to the bullpen. Martinez’s last appearance was in Las Vegas, where he allowed four runs in three innings. His last game in the majors was three weeks ago when he faced the San Francisco Giants. He allowed two runs on four hits in 4 1-3 innings and got the loss.

Yankees vs A's picks and predictions

Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.

Moneyline analysis

The odds are terrible for the Yankees for both the moneyline and the run line. The best moneyline odds are -213, while the best run line at -1.5 is -130.

So, I'll take the -1.5 and hope that Clarke Schmidt can give me some quality innings. He is only making his second start of his career and the only reason I don’t run screaming in the other direction is the A’s starter.

Adrian Martinez was a last-minute pick of manager Mark Kotsay. The A’s had originally said Zach Logue would go on Sunday, but Kotsay changed his mind and gave Martinez the nod, putting Logue in the bullpen.

It seems like a pick-your-poison type of choice for Kotsay. Logue was 3-8 with a 6.04 ERA in 11 games. Martinez, who has bounced around the minors most of this season and his career, is 2-3 in five starts over 23.2 innings and has a 6.08 ERA.

With two pitchers starting on Sunday with limited experience, I will favor the Yankees because of their offense. New York is second in runs and RBI, first in home runs, and 15th in batting average.

The A’s are last in batting average and hits, next to last in RBI and runs, and 25th in homers.

There is no doubt the Yankees have struggled the last month, but are 6-4 in their last 10. They lost Saturday night to the A’s but should prevail pretty easily on Sunday.

Prediction: Yankees -1.5 (-130 at DraftKings)

Over/Under analysis

Though the last two games, the Yankees have produced five runs and watched the Under twice. However, they did score 13 in the series opener on Thursday.

There is no doubt that New York is in a scoring slump, but I still think the Over hits because of Martinez's inexperience. His ERA of over six gives me hope that he can serve up some fat pitches for the team with the most home runs in the majors.

The A’s don’t have a quality closer, either. Dany Jimenez was put on the 60-day injured list with a strained right shoulder and will miss the rest of the season. The bullpen has allowed 195 runs in 447 2-3 innings, so they are good for an average of 3.9 runs per game.

Schmidt doesn’t get a pass here, either. He has an ERA of 2.18 but remember that was mostly in relief. The one game he started for the Yankees, he did pitch three shutout innings, but he hasn’t been tested beyond that. Will manager Aaron Boone let him go past three innings?

The Over has hit for the A’s in seven of their last nine of a Game 4 in a series and is 4-1 in their last five Sunday games.

The Yankees are 3-0-1 on the Over with the total set at 7-8.5 and the Over is 4-1 in their last five against a team with a winning percentage below .400.

Prediction: Over 8.5 (+100 at PointsBet)

Best bet

Adrian Martinez is not in an enviable position going into Sunday’s start against the Yankees. The 25-year-old right-hander has to try and quell one of the most potent lineups in baseball.

And his stats suggest he won’t be able to do it. Martinez has given up six home runs in four of his five games this season, part of his 16 earned runs. He has also allowed 27 hits in those five games.

Averaging more than three runs a game in his five starts would clear this prop bet. Factor in the fact that the Yankees are second in runs, averaging five a game, and I like this prop bet a lot.

Plus, at -105 it’s almost even money. Sign me up.

Adrian Martinez Prop: Over 2.5 earned runs (-105 at DraftKings)
