Cordell's prediction: Japan uses offensive prowess to pull away from Venezuela.

Japan will face its toughest test of this year’s World Baseball Classic in a marquee quarterfinal matchup with Venezuela.

My Venezuela vs. Japan predictions expect the defending champions to prevail on the back of ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto and elite on-base skills.

Let’s take a closer look at my World Baseball Classic best bets for Saturday, March 14.

Venezuela vs Japan prediction

Venezuela vs Japan best bet: Japan -1.5 (+105 at DraftKings)

Japan dominated the pool stage, going 4-0 with a +25 run differential.

They ranked third in home runs, but it wasn’t their power that made them so difficult, rather their plate discipline and contact skills.

Japan hit over .300 and drew 29 walks. Their OBP of .442 had them nipping at the heels of a historically good Dominican Republic team that managed a .453 OBP. No other team was above .415.

Japan will take bad pitches and make consistent contact with good ones, running up the pitch count of Ranger Suarez.

Once Suarez leaves, Japan’s offense will generate separation.

Venezuela vs Japan same-game parlay (SGP)

Japan -1.5

Over 7.5

Shohei Ohtani 1+ hits

Japan scored 8+ runs in three of four games. Their ability to work counts and get on base so consistently makes them difficult to keep to low totals.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto is an elite starter, and Japan possesses some excellent arms behind him, but Venezuela — led by Ronald Acuna Jr., Luis Arraez, and Jackson Chourio — has the talent to at least chip in.

Shohei Ohtani has hit safely in five of nine at bats and has plenty of experience on the biggest stages. Expect him to make his mark offensively.

Shohei Ohtani star player prop

Shohei Ohtani best bet: 1+ runs (-150 at DraftKings)

Shohei Ohtani has gotten on base nine times through three games.

Whether it’s doing damage with the bat in his hands, or taking pitches while opponents try to work around him, he has gotten on base at a crazy high rate. That’s likely to pay off with so many great contact hitters behind him.

Venezuela vs Japan opening odds

  • Moneyline: Venezuela +165 | Japan -210
  • Run line: Venezuela +1.5 (-130) | Japan -1.5 (+105)
  • Over/Under: Over 7.5 (-115) | Under 7.5 (-110)
