Maryland is out of the legal sports betting summer slowdown and primed for a huge NFL and college football season.

The Old Line State’s 12 online operators and 13 retail sportsbooks saw its online betting sites handle jump 68% month-over-month to $442.4 million in September, according to numbers released by Maryland Lottery and Gaming

Gross revenue rose an astounding 83% to $45.6 million from August as the operators’ hold moved from 9.4% to 10.3% in September, the first full month to showcase football. Between pro and college, the sport produced over $133 million in wagers.

Maryland sportsbooks handed out over $23 million in promotional plays, which was up from $8.1 million in August.

This is Maryland’s first full football season with online sports betting as the Old Line State began taking mobile wagers in late November 2022.

Mobile was responsible for 95.1% of Maryland’s overall handle and all but $2.6 million of revenue. Retail made up about $21.5 million in wagers and hit on an 11.9% win rate.

The state’s 15% tax rate generated $3.2 million in contributions to the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund

FanDuel paces online sportsbooks

FanDuel helped boost those online sports betting numbers and led Maryland with a handle of $175 million and went over $100 million for the second consecutive month. Revenue of $19.9 million in September paced the mobile field as well and rose 58% month-over-month.

DraftKings was second in handle at $154.1 million, like FanDuel, recorded a double-digit hold to produce $15.5 million of revenue.

BetMGM distanced itself from Caesars for third place with a handle of nearly $37 million. Caesars took in $18.8 million in wagers, and its 5.5% win rate was half of BetMGM’s 10.9.

MGM National gets back to winning

MGM National Harbor led all of Maryland’s brick-and-mortar sportsbooks in September with a handle of $6.9 million and claimed a taxable win of over $444,000, which was better than the $170,000 it lost in August.

Live Casino saw a huge uptick in action as the second-best retail handle in Maryland rose from $2.8 million in August to $5.9 million in September. Its 13.7% hold produced a taxable win of over $765,000.

Horseshoe Casino, Hollywood Casino, Oceans Down Casino, and Bingo World all took in over $1 million in wagers for September.
