The Arizona Department of Gaming (ADG) reported a total handle of just under $706.4 million for January, generating $69.3 million in gross revenue before adjustments.

Sportsbooks in Arizona drove $46.1 million in adjusted gross revenue, and sports bettors in the Valentine State earned $635.4 million in winnings. State coffers pocketed $4.6 million in tax revenue, bringing the total to $73.8 million since the inception of Arizona sports betting.

This is a hot start to the year for Arizona after the state ended 2023 with a $6.5 billion betting handle. The monthly handle grew month-over-month from the $693.3 million accepted in December but fell just shy of November’s record $713.5 million.

Overall, the $706.4 million wagered in January represents a 19.5% increase compared to January 2023’s handle.

Online books dominate the market

Mobile sportsbooks in Arizona once again drove the lion’s share of wagering, touting a total handle of $698 million in January with just over $6 million wagered at the state’s retail sportsbooks.

FanDuel and DraftKings dominate nearly 70% of online sports betting in Arizona, collecting $258.1 million and $228.2 million in bets, respectively. This drove $31.2 million in gross mobile revenue for FanDuel and $22.5 million for DraftKings’ mobile business.

BetMGM took in the third most bets in January with an $84.6 million handle for its online sportsbook. Meanwhile, Caesars and ESPN BET are neck-and-neck for total online handle, with the former taking $50.2 million in bets and the latter collecting $49.5 million.

BetMGM and Caesars made out much better in gross revenue than ESPN Bet did though, earning $9.6 million and $3.4 million respectively while ESPN Bet’s gross revenue was just over $348,000 on a sub-1% hold.

DraftKings and FanDuel also commanded the retail market. DraftKings boasted a $3.2 million handle and FanDuel had a $1.7 million handle, good for over 80% of the state’s total retail figures. However, the gross retail revenues for both operators are paltry in comparison to their Goliath online numbers, coming in at $144,519.60 for DraftKings and $62,810.44 for FanDuel.
