I believe it was Benjamin Franklin who said, "There is nothing certain in this world except for death, taxes, and LeBron James scoring at least 10 points in every NBA regular-season game he plays."

Well, I regret to inform you that one of those things is no longer true: James didn’t score 10 points last night. He recorded only eight.

With the Los Angeles Lakers and Toronto Raptors tied with only seconds left on the game clock, and with James sitting on just eight points for the evening, James opted to pass, not shoot.

Rui Hachimura then made a 3-pointer as time expired, and the Lakers won 123-120.

Perhaps more importantly, James had still scored only eight points when the game ended, not 10 or more as he had done in his previous 1,297 regular-season contests.

So, an epic streak came to an end. And so did an epic run for sports bettors who were paying steeper and steeper prices to wager that James would score at least 10 points each game.

That bet had become infamous over the past year or so, elevated into our collective gambling consciousness by the bettor known as "Foazn" and immortalized with coverage by ESPN and others.

It also looks like some people took a big loss when the music stopped and the trend ended.

For example, theScore Bet (formerly ESPN BET) reported Friday that among pregame wagers, James 10+ points, priced at -5,000 (meaning you'd have to bet $5,000 to win $100), was its seventh-most bet non-NFL player prop by handle Thursday.

“Including live betting, LeBron 10+ points was the most bet player prop across all events outside of Thursday Night Football by total handle,” the online sportsbook operator said. “The selection accounted for more than 18% of all NBA player prop handle last night (including all bet types).”

Now, theScore Bet isn't the biggest of online sportsbooks in the U.S. So you can infer from the above that even more people were holding losing James 10+ point tickets at DraftKings, FanDuel, and other sportsbooks when last night's game ended.

At any rate, Friday marks the end of James' legendary point streak and the end of a winning streak for bettors who continued to back that trend.

It’s not a given in today’s NBA that anyone will play on any given night, but if James is going against the Boston Celtics on Friday, it’s possible the streak could start again.

Nevertheless, always bet responsibly. Even if it’s on James.
