Ever wondered how a bettor could 100x their money overnight during the College Football Playoff? FOX South Florida’s Andy Slater is just two Miami wins away from achieving it.

Slater placed a $500 futures wager at +10000 odds on the Hurricanes to win the College Football National Championship, a bet that would pay $50,500 if it wins.

Key Takeaways

  • Miami’s odds have shrunk from +10000 to +300.

  • The Hurricanes are 3.5-point favorites against Ole Miss in the CFP semifinal.

  • Hard Rock Bet offered a $10,686.14 cash out.

Slater, a self-described on-air personality and talk show host, first posted his slip on Dec. 3, before the CFP field was announced.

The bet, placed at Hard Rock Bet, was a major risk for several reasons.

First, Miami was on the outside looking in at the playoff, according to many pundits. The Hurricanes didn’t receive an auto bid by winning the ACC, and the popular belief was that their two-loss resume wouldn’t be enough to garner selection for the playoff field.

On top of that, the Hurricanes didn’t face a very difficult schedule, and both of their losses were against unranked opposition.

The +10000 CFP championship odds that Slater staked carried an implied probability of .99%. In other words, Miami would be expected to win the National Championship in just under one out of 100 simulations.

Just about one month later, and the Hurricanes are two games away from being crowned champions and cashing the bet. They are tied for the second-best futures odds of all remaining teams, and they’re 3.5-point favorites against Ole Miss in the semifinal.

Not backing down

Sticking with odds from Hard Rock Bet – the only legal online sportsbook in Florida – Miami has +300 National Championship odds. The only team with shorter odds is Indiana (+125), and they’re tied with Oregon. Ole Miss is at +550.

Hard Rock Bet last offered Slater $10,686.14 to cash out of his bet, according to a Jan. 5 update shared on his X account.

The +300 odds carry an implied probability of 25%, which is about 25.3 times more than the implied probability of +10000 odds. Based on that math, a fair cash-out offer would be around $12,626.26.

There haven’t been any indications that Slater is interested in redeeming the cash-out. He posted “No deal” and “Nice try” with images of his slip after Miami beat Texas A&M in the first round and Ohio State in the quarterfinal, tagging Hard Rock Bet’s X account in both of the posts.

His latest update on Monday said, “It’s game week and I see @HardRockBet is having second thoughts! I’m not!”

Miami faces Ole Miss in semifinal

Miami's impressive stint in the CFP saw them beat Texas A&M as three-point underdogs on the road and Ohio State as 9.5-point dogs at a neutral venue. Both times, they controlled the line of scrimmage and were excellent on defense, allowing 17 combined points.

Their semifinal matchup with Ole Miss will see them encounter the red-hot Trinidad Chambliss, who just torched Georgia’s defense in the semifinal.

Miami QB Carson Beck played Ole Miss twice during his time at Georgia, going 1-1 outright. He threw for a combined 492 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions.
