The arrest was part of an annual sex trafficking enforcement surge that happens during Super Bowl week, and San Jose police joined agencies across the Bay Area in similar operations that apprehended other suspects.
The Oakland Police Department alone arrested 45 people related to human trafficking as part of its operations leading up to the Super Bowl, according to a statement from the department.
Law enforcement agencies have long propagated the narrative that sex trafficking incidents increase during Super Bowl week, but experts have widely debunked that claim.
Studies from the University of South Florida, the International Justice Mission, Anti-Trafficking Review and McCain Institute all found no direct link between the Super Bowl and an increase in sex trafficking, while calling out the claim as a widely held myth promoted by law enforcement agencies.
