Happy 4th Everyone!!!! 1-1 on my posted picks - Let's look at some numbers:
Minn Matthews 115
-174 NYY Beck 288 -
Line opened at -174 and dropped to -149 currently (sportsmemo.com) . I use a variety of sources and my own methodology to come up with ratings for each pitcher. In this case Matthews is 115 and Beck negative 288. On paper Mathews is definitely the choice. Beck was re-called - his only start in the majors was back on May 7 and wasn't very good - thus the high number and negative rating. Beck has been pretty dominant in the minors but I don't consider minor league performance as an indicator at the major league level - apples to oranges comparison imho. So why Beck in this situation - when you have a negative rating and the opening line for the negative rating pitcher is significant-150 or greater - often the home team takes it on the run line. My book allows -1. My plays:
1. Yanks -1 -111
2. F5 under 5.5 -105
Good luck all
