    If u can’t Hit HR’s you basically need 3 hits in an inning to score a run.  With the humidor balls.. some of these these teams should adapt.

    @ToddC

     So many teams have runners on 2nd with no outs or runners on 1st and 2nd and no outs and zero runs.. I guess this is what MLB wants.. the elite teams will score no matter what.. but the others are pathetic

    I agree. I remember that 02 World Series winner Anaheim Angels team. Yeah they had power, but small ball is what won those guys the ship.

    Maybe coaching staff are dealing with primadonna players who cannot bunt or even put ball in play when the pitcher doesn’t want you to. All of nothing type at bats

    There are fewer people in the world that willingly would sit through a low scoring baseball (or football) game.

    This is also why they are fighting to get rid of the shift (which I think is ridiculous that they would actually tell a team how to play defense)

    The whole goal here (and you guys who have played serious ball in your lives have heard this saying before) is to "hit it where they ain't!"

    Ground ball with eyes...........etc........

    Most of this is lost on players nowadays.  It is a homerun or K.  I like homeruns, don't get me wrong, but I also don't like adjusting the game to try and influence "more excitement"

    Just my humble opinion.

    @davemsh

     Agree.

    But the transition will take time. A zebra can't change their stripes. These kids have been taught the wrong way for a while now.

    Pitchers have adjusted by making conventional secondary pitches their primary pitches of late, and hitters are pretty bad at hitting sliders, cutters and sinkers.

    The swing path of today's batters stand little to no chance against those moving pitches.

    Hopefully the transition happens sooner than later. I'd like to see batters get into good battles with pitchers. For example, fouling off all the shit and pressuring the pitcher to make a mistake.

    Its hard enough to just hit the ball, just luck that if theyre swinging and the ball happens to be in proximity. If batters can direct the ball where they want then bunters should be accurate at least 80% of the time and they arent..  All the numbers and stats in baseball are superficial imo..at the end of the day you pick the better overall team with less tendency to commit errors and smarter pitchers at the helm.

    Upper management and team owners are getting presure from the league, "more offense, make the game exciting, more home runs, and we'll give you a money bonus - tell your manager to somehow win games with this philosophy, otherwise the league will wither and die" - I believe basically the league is pressuring teams to "play ball" with this home run strategy. Really MLB? You're going to make the shift illegal? Juice balls and then deny it until scientists cut them open and prove you're a bald face liar? What's next, legalize steroids for batters? Who cares if the players die young, we'll have great offense!

    It's like opera houses hiring singers who can't sing that well but cut a mean figure on stage, lower the orchestra for these tiny voices and make the younger generation happy and they save our art form by huge compromise = read: a crappier product.

    The quality of things in this world is becoming a joke...................... Unfortunately it means we purists need to shift. And do so now, before it's illegal.

    I always wondered how a team would do if they strictly just tried to hit singles or slap the ball down the line or over the infielder or against the shift

    I feel like it would be extremely successful

    @green33

     Hitters like Rod Carew, Pete Rose, Tony Gwynn, Ichiro, would have had a field day if some team tried to play any type of a shift. Not only their ability to hit the ball where they wanted but the bunt. There are alot of "hits" being left on the field against the shift. I see it every now and again, Margot on the Rays dropped an average bunt down and could have jogged to 1st base, easiest hit he's probably ever had. The Cardinals in the 80's were great at small ball, get on base, advance the runner or steal second, base hit, score. Get the guy to third, sac fly. Squeeze play/bunt. It's too bad, different mentality now. There are players if they knew how to drag bunt could raise their batting average 20 points and Lord knows some of them could use it.peace_5

    @mrusso

     Tony Gwynn.

    One of my favorite stats is that he faced Smoltz/Glavine/Maddux 287 times, and had 3 Ks and a .381 average against those 3, basically in their prime.
