Play 162 game long ass season only to allow 12 teams in. A marathon then a sprint.
162 game season and the biggest advantage(3 game home series) goes to the last teams in.
162 game season but they even tell you the only series that matters is Championship and WS because the rest are 5 games or less yet they let in all these teams.
I may be theminority here because ratings and keeping all the teams in the race and money is what matters to most but I really ;ike when the playoffs were on 4 total teams. I could live with 8 but......The season really meant something

I understand why they do it. They let more teams and, therefore, more fans into the playoffs.
But they do not want the playoff season to drag on forever.
The thinking is if you are worried about losing a 2-out-of-3 series -- especially on the road -- then do not put yourself in that position.
In other words, win your division so that you are in a position for your better team to win out and beat variance over a longer series.
But it is very frustrating because all it takes is one slip-up or one starter to be off. Or one manager to pull a starter that is doing fine too early -- like Atlanta did.
I agree with you to a point.

They changed so many rules to 'update' the game I don't see why they can't reduce the number of regular season games and have a playoff that makes more sense. These 3 game series are stupid, a series in baseball should be at least 5.

Its funny they care about the historical significance of playing 162 games and the numbers it represents for player stats but not the signifigance that 162 gamne season has in terms of the best most s]deserving teams That and money is why they won change it. More games more money.

Up until 1961 the American league played 154 games. The National league the year after. So while that was , still quite a while ago. It still was in relatively recent mlb history

Well for years only 2 teams made the playoffs. Then only 4 for 30 years. Then 8 for 15 years. Now 10 teams make it to the playoffs.
So, a very easy argument can be made that half of them should not even be in the playoffs.
Why reward teams for getting hot at the end of the season or at the beginning and cooling off -- to just barely make the playoffs.
The point could be argued to reward the teams that do the very best over the total season.
So, now you have teams that have winning percentages of barely over 50%. Whereas the clear best teams win well over 60% of their games.
I see both sides of the argument. But The best teams should be 'rewarded' with longer series to make sure they have the advantage; the worst teams should be 'punished' for not having a better overall season by having a shorter series.
On the other hand, some folks like longer series and hopefully a 'Cinderella' can make it through.
Besides, I think you lose some fans with too many longer series that involve mediocre teams.

I like it. With that being said I don't really consider these wild card games as actual playoffs. More like the play in games for the ncaa tournament. Yes technically it's the playoffs but the real playoffs start next round in my opinion. The funniest thing to me is seeing these hoodies the teams are wearing saying something to the effect of October baseball. Can't remember the exact phrase. October something lol. All the teams that were eliminated yesterday didn't play a single game in October lol. So yeah the real playoffs start Saturday.
