In a local tv interview yesterday afternoon, Terry Collins admitted his team has given up and "cashed in their chips for the season'.  Fade em till the end.

Um, usually when a coach calls out his team to the public, he's not admitting to the fans, "hey we're giving up. no need to pay attention to us anymore."...he is doing it for a reason, and the team usually responds.

A team responds when there's something to play for.  In this case there clearly isn't.

Well you're actually right.  They did respond. They lost 5-2 last night to an awful team with picther with an ERA approaching 6.00 at home.

I guess millions of dollars in salary falls under the "Not Worth Playing For" category as does pride. If you think a professional athlete playing in the highest league in the world had somehow gotten there by not having a competitive nature regardless of his team's place in the standings, you've probably never played a sport at a high level. It's easy for fans and bettors to give up on a team, but when you're the one out there getting your ass kicked, your pride steps in at some point and says, "let's turn this shit around" if not "let's not get embarrassed."

Well I guess your entire point was proven by one game of baseball. You heard it here, guys. Bet against the Mets from here on out, and you will win every time...it's easy money.

They lost 7 of their last 10.  All by 2 or more runs. 28/30 in runs scored since the break. Dead last in bullpen ERA since the break. Go ahead bet on them.  I'll just while you .  That competitive nature is doing wonders. Done talking to you.  You have no stats to disupte what I have said.

I don't have stats, but I have logic. I was on the Rockies yesterday...but not because I think the Mets have given up. If you want to say, "the Mets suck. Fade them." I will agree with you. But if you're telling me, "A coach went on camera and admitted that he has lost control of the team, and that some of the best players in the world are going to stop trying. Fade them for that reason." I'll say that's stupid. A coach goes to the front office and says he's going to try and light a fire under the team before he does that...or else he's just going on camera and saying, "I deserve to be fired." Competitive nature isn't disproved by a team being inferior to others. The Mets overachieved early, and I've been fading them since. But again, it's not because I believe that players whose performances have millions of dollars riding on them have decided "it's not worth it."

sutton your an ass. mets have been sliding since the all star break so nobody is fading the mets on 1 game. collins is just doing his job, saying what he needs to say to the media. the players have obviously packed it in, getting hosed by one of the worst teams in baseball is all the proof you need. there are lots of examples of teams that pack it in. dont be naive & talk like these are pros & will keep showing up. you really are making no case at all that the mets are bettable.

He's very naive.  Believing every team will give 100% till the end. He also didn't see the interview.  The coach was asked difficult questions about the team giving up.  He didn't go to them with it. Guys like this ruin this forum.  I saw an interview that I found interesting and possibly helpful to the forum.  Just grief in return.

You are both missing my point. I'm not saying everyone should throw their money on the Mets. I'm saying the Mets are losing because they suck...not because they have given up. They got "hosed" by hot team who won 8 of their last 10 (the two losses being by 1 run). I know the Mets have been sliding since the all-star break. Do you think it's cause they quit at the halfway point in the season? No. It's because their regression was inevitable as they are not a good team. I'd be surprised if either of you have played a sport beyond the high-school level if you can't understand that these players may struggle, they may be in a slump, they may be not as collectively good as the other players in the league, but they don't "cash in their chips" in August.

By the way, Francisco definitely looked like he didn't really give a shit about his or the team's performance. That is apathy defined right there.

Blackjay-Please post links to your past and future winning picks so that all of the average bettors in the forum can benefit from your expertise. I assume you have proof that you've been winning with talk like that. Correct?

Guys, I'm not talking in short terms saying today's game will be won by x. I'm saying that overall, teams and players don't quit. Does a struggling brokerage firm say "fuck it, we'll just pin the Wall Street Journal on the wall and throw darts at it"? Does a salesperson say, "I haven't made a sale in a while and haven't been meeting my numbers. I'll just say 'fuck it' til next year."

And way besides that point, I think if someone is going to place bets not by looking at pitcher vs hitter trends, ballpark advantages, detailed stats, etc. but instead place bets based on a tv interview where a manager (whose job it is to motivate and inspire his team) implies that his team is made up of quitters, they're in trouble.

I have a winning record.  I finished in the green last season too.  Not sure why you're questioning my capping.  All of my picks were posted both seasons.  I hope you have an excellent posted record if you're questioning me. The best cappers in the forum don't even talk like you.

Since you don't post all of your picks and track your records I'm not interested in your "expert" opinions.  No need for us to talk to each other.

Again, not my point. I didn't say you're a bad capper. I also didn't say that I'm an excellent capper. I was saying that the original post on this thread is bullshit, because you can't fade a team based on a tv interview, especially when the interview is relatively likely to produce a reversal of the trend. Your replies to my posts were more informative to the bettors than the original post. You listed data, stats and information that is more valuable to a sports bettor than the absurd implication that a team has quit.

I'm sorry but you're dead wrong. I have to agree with dereksutton, the fact that the skipper called out his team is about the best motivation that could make this team have a relatively strong finish. Now they have something to play for: showing that they have not quit on their fans. And showing that the team is not full of quitters is SOMETHING TO PLAY FOR, especially since it will carry over to the next year. How many times do fans get excited going into a season just because their team finished the prior season strong.

Probably the main argument in favor of not fading the Mets simply because of this perception that they have quit is the fact that at the end of the day these players get paid based on their performance. Probably more than in any career, baseball players are judged by pure numbers. A starting pitcher getting 3 extra wins in a season can correspond to getting an extra 3 million dollars per season on a contract. So now tell me if that's not something to play for. (Agents use any piece of information to boost their clients in order to get a higher salary for them, including GAME WINNING HITS).

So there you have it, three great arguments against your unsound theory: 1) Pride/ Competitiveness...2) Investment in fans...3) Salary based on stats.

I will actually play the Mets for the next 20 games actually. They might not win 15 games in this stretch, but I'll guarantee you they will put a much better effort than what they have been doing lately.

Well the then I guess you should bet them for the next 20 games. If you win money in that 20 game stretch I will post in this thread saying I'm wrong.  I disagree with both of you.

What's with all of the Newbies bashing and questioning others?  I've seen in it a few threads since I came back a few weeks ago.

I'm not entirely with him, Locks. I still contend that the Mets suck, but I don't think they will quit. I will bet each game independently.

As will I Derek.  I did not play the Rockies ore the Mets today.  My point is they are bad, they are not playing well, and I will never back them. I will certainly bet against them a lot for the rest of the season though. I see there's a lot of Mets love for the Mets today in the forum which suprises the hell out of me.  Throught they should know what the coach said.

On a side note: Baxter just unneccesarily tagged up on a bloop single to right and got thrown out at second.  It wasn't even close to being caught. Embarrassing baseball.
