I am waiting on the windows 10. From something I read, they are offering Windows 8/8.1 users the free upgrade. But after a certain period of time you will have to pay for it. I will likely just stick with 8.1. If 10 is completely free, I may do it.
I have 8,they gave me the link for 10 free,my Daughter told me not to upgrade to it based on what she has read, plus she is in college and that is her major, but I have no idea why she does not want free upgrade.

I accepted Windows 10 yesterday and everything was fine, even this morning when I updated all my data. Then about 700 AM. PDT I shut down for a while, then fired her up again. As of that point I can not access ANY of my Office functions, Word, Excel, etc. Anyone know what is up with this? Microsoft support is a joke. I have already chatted with them, been brushed off, and am awaiting a return call that may never come. Do we have a techie in the house that can help or someone that has already been through this and knows the solution?
Same thing happened to me years ago when I changed a computer to Windows 7 from XP. Ended up that I no longer had my Office Download Key and had to purchase a new Mic. Office. If you can find your Auth Key, you simply have to reload Office, if not, you will be SOL. BOL

1st,
unplug all peripherals except the keyboard & mouse. Then reset the
Mac from Open Firmware, which is a more thorough wipe of the PRAM than
zapping it (= Marky's suggestion).
1. Restart the Mac and immediately hold down the CommandOption+OF
keys. This will boot you into open firmware. When it stops, you will be
looking at a ">" prompt. 2. At the prompt, type each of the following three
lines, followed by pressing the Return key. Type each line exactly as
show — without the (type it EXACTLY and then press Return) part — no capital letters or spaces.
reset-nvram (type it EXACTLY and then press Return) set-defaults (type it EXACTLY and then press Return) reset-all (type it EXACTLY and then press Return)
The Mac should restart after pressing Return on the third command.

If you’re not seeing any restore points, it might be because system protection isn’t turned on. To check, go to the Control Panel, search for Recovery, and then select Recovery > Configure System Restore > Configure and make sure Turn on system protection is selected.
I am no extreme techie by any stretch, but I don't think a restore is possible here if I understand this correctly. If you loaded 10, from Win. 7, or 8, it completely wipes, then reloads your operating system, then there is nothing to restore to anymore. God knows I could be wrong here.

If you just upgrade, it doesn't wipe the previous Windows install (files located in Windows.old folder).

Nice instructions. I try to keep it simple for someone I dont know lol but you did a great job explaining that.

Kicking off the consumer-focused Windows 10 event in Redmond on Tuesday, January 21, Microsoft operating system chief Terry Myerson announced that current users of Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows Phone 8.1 will be able to upgrade to the new operating system for free as long as they do so within one year of Windows 10's July 29 launch. Once you’ve claimed the upgrade, it's permanent, and Microsoft will keep you updated for the supported lifetime of the device.

Key search for a windows.old folder as long as you didn't run a clean install and you just updated it should all be there

may need to run a repair on office. go to control panel, programs, click on office and hit the change/uninstall button at the top. should give you an option to repair.

You guys are going to LOVE this. I was getting really frustrated and Mark was trying to help me when a link said "run in compatibility mode". OK, I open properties and guess what? This newest version of Excel DOES NOT OFFER compatibility mode. So, just out of frustration and desperation I click on "run as administrator" BINGO, everything comes back exactly as it should have been operating. So, no sooner do I have all systems up and running but Microsoft gives me the callback they promised 3 hours ago, and no sooner do I answer the phone, than they cut me off! I swear if they weren't the 500 lb. gorilla in the room I would never buy anything from them again. Anyway, it's late, lines have moved in a direction I don't like and it looks like a bad karma day, if you believe in that type of sh.it............OK, I was at that point in typing this and big mac tries the call again. I explain the problems and of course he is not the department that can help me, gonna transfer me over to the guys with the patch. NOW, it has been another 15 minutes and noone is coming on the line, surprise, surprise. I will see you tomorrow if I do not have my stroke before then.
Now and then even a BLIND squirrel can find an acorn

All Bill Gates cares about is money. He knows people like you will grab the newest thing like it was candy. I've done the same thing. This guy is a real wacko! He wants to give every flocking African a laptop because he knows our bleeding heart liberal government will give him money to do so. Nevermind that thousands are dying of E bola and they don't have running water or a crapper to crap in. He wants to take your money and that's it. He doesn't care that there are bugs in Windows 9, 10 or 192. He knows that you will download shitT if it's new.
