The Pirates are facing their third straight LH starter. The last two combined to give up 13 hits and 6 ER in 8 1/3 innings for an ERA of 6.48. They are better against lefties now with the emergence of Valdez. Pirates runs scored in Ashcraft's last five starts: 7-7-11-11-12. I think he'll be fine with the added rest and against a tired team that hasn't seen him before.

Why not just play 1st 5? And if it hits be done with game and if it loses you will get pirates with a much better live line whether run line or ML
Ashcraft didn't have it, so this doesn't matter. But, to answer your question, I would typically not want to bet FG on Pitt, but with the Yankees coming off a doubleheader and Bednar and maybe Headrick being unavailable, I was ok with the FG bet.
And I don't live bet baseball.
