Just one in 50 victims of America’s deadly drone strikes in Pakistan are terrorists – while the rest are innocent civilians, a new report claimed today.

The authoritative joint study, by Stanford and New York Universities, concludes that men, women and children are being terrorised by the operations ’24 hours-a-day’.

And the authors lay much of the blame on the use of the ‘double-tap’ strike where a drone fires one missile – and then a second as rescuers try to drag victims from the rubble. One aid agency said they had a six-hour delay before going to the scene.

The tactic has cast such a shadow of fear over strike zones that people often wait for hours before daring to visit the scene of an attack. Investigators also discovered that communities living in fear of the drones were suffering severe stress and related illnesses. Many parents had taken their children out of school because they were so afraid of a missile-strike.

Researchers added that traumatic effects of the strikes go far beyond fatalities, psychologically battering a population which lives under the daily threat of annihilation from the air, and ruining the local economy.

They conclude by calling on Washington completely to reassess its drone-strike programme or risk alienating the very people they hope to win over. They also observe that the strikes set worrying precedents for extra-judicial killings at a time when many nations are building up their unmanned weapon arsenals.

The Obama administration is unlikely to heed their demands given the zeal with which America has expanded its drone programme over the past two years. Reapers and Predators are now active over the skies of Somalia and Yemen as well as Pakistan and – less covertly – Afghanistan.

i am of the opinion that there will be some serious blowback here shortly on down the road, and more importantly, set a dangerous precedent for how governments utilize drones

And that sometime in the near future, we can pretend to look all surprised that there was consequences to our actions

Blowback? Sure no one can deny that, but at the same time it is what happens when terrorists hide behind innocent victims.

Who is defining people as terrorists? Of course most of the people killed are "innocent". Its not like their facebook status says:

    Jihad Suicide Bomber

Be easy.... What a worthless article thought.. This is your defense for not supporting drones.. Yeah real, reliable source. GTFO here with this garbage source. No point in even reading through all this tripe.

You want accurate facts take a look at the UN charter for defense and the committees that report on the collateral damage compared to a standard military combat squad..

I hate to say it, but many times these "Innocent" people are the ones harboring and hiding these terrorists.

This is actually the raw truth. Tough pill to swallow but facts and data suggest drones are highly accurate and affective at minimizing innocent fatalities.

War is awful. Someday it'll end.

BeEasy, you might want to consider leaving this country, if your more concerned with terrorists dying, and the collateral damage that goes with it.  Maybe if all these so called innocent victims that you speak of reined in all this scumbag terrorists, then maybe we wouldnt have to come looking for them

Your true colors got exposed with this thread.  Now i understand why all you do is bash our countries govt every chance you get.

Had the rest of you read the article, you might not have wasted your time posting such nonsense. The raw truth is that these things aren't that accurate, which is part of the reason for the "double tap", and the "double tap", not necessarily the drones themselves, is the issue of the thread.  In that it is as cowardly a maneuver in warfare as one can engage in (bombing the medics)

You are so arrogant.. It's laughable.

I posted a thread in the politics section about drones and their minimal collateral damage COMPARED to standard ground military combat squads..The report was done but the UN charter for defense commission and they found that the collateral damage was significantly lower, and what did you do in that thread?? Do you remember? You dismissed it's validity right off the bat and then went on one of you conceited tangents about how you're smarter than everyone else...

    You're posts are predictable.

Although I'm not saying I believe in the ticking time bomb theory by any means... Drones have been extremely effective in taking out top terrorist leaders as well reducing the civilian fatality rate..

    Very well put Stiln

BeEasy is always arrogant about everything. He truly believes that hes the smartest person in the world and has the answer to everything. It doesnt matter the topic, the hater of America is always right.

Its also funny how laws he doesnt like, he believes them to be wrong

I dont give a crap how many people are getting killed in collateral damage because of terrorists.  Maybe all these countries should step up and put a stop to all their own terrorists, then we wouldnt have to.

Does the number of innocent victims equal 2,997 yet ? If not, we haven't gotten all square for 09/11.

I love it when people who are critical of the government's international policy tell others to leave the country, as though they own it.

As though their blind loyalty, regardless of, in this case innocent bloodletting (which are almost always the poor and peasants, typically women and children) is the condition for a citizen to stay on this soil.

You are one of the "bewildered herd" and you don't even know it.

The lack of critical thought or informed opinion in a statement like "Move" in response to a very real occurrence, that is the destruction on a massive scale of human life in another country, makes those who are informed and those who do think critically about these policies laugh hardily.

    Keep typing, it's very entertaining.

I would say 151,000 innocent civilians killed (a number that pales in comparison to the actual total today since this was in 2008 and is only limited to Iraq), is > 2,997.

I wonder if that's square to the small-minded like Getty's...

Why would he know or care? He wouldn't read things like the OP's article in his spare time or the posted one I just provided.

    Yet.
It will be the next Great Britain who used to rule the world.
China is taking over as the biggest economy in the world in a couple of years.
THIS will be the end of the greatest country in the world.
Al Qaeda, Iraq and Afghanistan just made the transition quicker than expected.
Some Americans will as some British still think they are no.1 but the reality is that the USA will be number 2.
This will of course change the world and maybe some Americans will be less dumb and arrogant when they are assembling products in slave factories for the Chinese in California
