We have some big games on tap for Week Three. Here are some worth noting with the current lines. HOME TEAMS IN CAPS.
Thursday, Sept. 17
PITTSBURGH -10' Syracuse - The Orange are looking to atone for a pair of blowout losses to Pitt the last two seasons. They let me down bigly last week, losing to Cal 21-18 despite outgaining the Golden Bears by 187 total yards. I'm not sure what we can take from the Panthers' 12-7 win over UCF. The game was played in a downpour, and it looks like rain is in the forecast this week as well.
Friday, Sept. 18
Miami FL -21 (up from -19') WAKE FOREST - The Hurricanes have essentially had two weeks to prepare for this game, but they do have a banged up secondary. Wake is coming off a double OT win at Purdue and is on a short week. I'm not about to step in front of Miami in this one, but another rainy forecast could muck things up.
TEXAS TECH -7' (down from -12') Houston - The Red Raiders have owned this series winning seven straight, including last year's 35-11 beatdown in Houston. Both teams had their hands full with Oregon St. the last two weeks, especially TTU last week. They trailed the Beavers, 24-21, midway through the fourth quarter before two late TDs pulled their fat out of the fire, but they were outgained by 120 total yards and don't look near as dominant as they were a year ago. The Cougars could be a handful here.
Saturday, Sept. 19 - early games
Arizona St. -5' Kansas - This one is being played at Wembley Stadium in London, and BOTH teams are coming off blowout losses. The Sun Devils would appear to be at a big disadvantage here, off their 48-20 loss at Texas A&M and now having to travel across the pond. At least the Jawhawks' 38-21 loss to Mizzou was in Lawrence. Seems like the dog usually has the better of it in these international games, but I hate betting on 'em.
CLEMSON -3' (down from -9') North Carolina - Big revenge game for Bill Belichick's Tar Heels, and they've basically had three weeks to prepare for this one. Both teams seem far removed from last year's Clemson beatdown. The North Carolina defense is much improved over last season, and combined with the Tigers' offensive ineptitude points would appear to be a premium here. Also, freshman Tait Reynolds will line up behind center for the Tiger Paw. A freshman QB going up up against a Bill Belichick defense. Hmmm.......
Georgia -24' (up from -17') ARKANSAS - Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs have won ten straight SEC road openers, although they're just 5-5 ATS. The Razorbacks have lost 11 straight conference games, and have only covered four of those. The Hogs' 43-10 blowout loss at Utah last week doesn't make me feeling too confident that they can hang with UGA in this one.
