It’s become an epidemic in both college and pros and Whittingham of Utah joins idiot group which includes Kirby Smart. Whittingham passed on three short field goals inside the BYU 30, getting stuffed each time on forth down and ended up losing by three.
Getting points is momentum builder for the defense, which turned around allowed BYU to drive for touchdowns. Stupid crap by some of the highest paid coaches in football. Yes I was on Utah

I was thinking the same thing last night. If teams go back and look at the amount of field goals they pass over to go for it on 4th down (and not get it) I would think it would amount to at least 1 to 2 wins a season.

I've been complaining about this since they started doing this and have been met by keyboard geniuses spewing the same rhetoric the television told them...analytics. Lol. This will happen in a championship game at some point and all the Monday morning talk will be about if they had just kick a field goal or two they would have won the game. Notice the word analytics was always brought up, but nobody brings up the percentages of conversions since they've been going for it on 4th down, you know it's a pretty low percentage, nowhere close to 50%.

Had Indiana -27.5 vs Mich St. Indy up 25, ball on the 10, 4&1 with 2 min to go. They kicked a fg!?? OK, got my cover. Oh no, Sparty goes length of field, 33 sec left, 4&12, down 28pts, and they too kicked a fg!!!
Why Cignetti didn't go for it on 4th & 1 a bit baffling. Result could have been they don't get a first down, they get a first down and run out the clock or get a td.

I was thinking the opposite.

I believe Cignetti trys to cover the spread in blowouts more than you typically see coaches do. I thought he did it at James Madison and his history at IU makes me believe it even more. Should probably check to see if that's right but I don't usually bet games with huge spreads, but I have made an exception with Cignetti. I laid the number and when he kicked the field goal it looked kind of bush but was consistent with my opinion.
I also wouldn't be suprised if the MSU coach thought the same thing and decided to fuck him on the cover with their field goal. Speculation on my part but I feel I've seen him do it enough that I bet on it.
