I think they have a great chance, I would have liked to get the +6, line dropped to +5 so alot of people are taking them tonight. Game will be on ESPNU, I think the guys will be up for this one and keep it close, if not win the game outright. Look for a 3-5 point game either way. Love to hear what NRopp thinks, though.

1/13 Results: Appalachian State flat out embarrassing loss. Nice win for Drexel. Top nine teams in the CAA are now 20-2 at home. Tell me Buffalo shoots 50%, I probably think that’s a win. Both teams shot 53 and 50% and only went over the total by four points. Big game from Viney for Loyola Marymount last night, sort of shows how much they missed him in last year’s forty point shellacking. Rhode Island finally gets a big win. Washington’s in trouble when teams slow them down. Scary what Stanford has done this year so far. Tennessee Tech plays to a 214 point total and three overtimes and they welcome Murray State to their place less than 48 hours later. Can I please get that physical strong Murray State defense to reappear at least one time this year? Tenny Tech plays fast, and Murray State ran with them last year, but this offense for some reason is in no way shape or form putting up anywhere close to last year’s #’s. Totals in this series the last seven meetings have closed in the 140’s. I’m thinking this one gets nowhere near that. Should be a pretty nice flat spot for Tech, assuming the Murray of old shows up. If not, then the flat spot for Tech occurs when they travel the following game to Peay.

    Sides: 44-29, +25.30
    Totals: 38-18, +25.10
    DNP: 58-47

1/14 Notes: Pretty big game for Detroit in a nationally televised home game against everyone’s Horizon target in Butler. I’m not really interested in tonight’s game but the results should help with the next few. They get Valpo at home before going to Cleveland State midweek next week. Pretty rough 3 game stretch for them. Four of Butler’s next five road games are against uppers as well. Detroit hasn’t played an offense like Butler’s all year (maybe Syracuse, slightly different though). They also haven’t played a top 100 defense in over a month. Both teams with a full week to prepare. Detroit needs McCallum to have a big night if they’re going to compete. Problem is, he’ll be guarded by Nored who is one of the best on-ball defenders in the country. It’ll be interesting to see if Butler tries to get up and down with them, I personally don’t think it would be a wise decision. They need to get in the half court and work on their strength which is putting Nored on McCallum in the half court. If that happens, I point to the under, but I’d rather use this result for the near future. I don’t think Wright State would look past Valpo in this spot, but they do have Butler coming in on Sunday. Valpo slight letdown after beating Cleveland State? Possible. Just a weird spot for both teams. I like Iona (my #1) at Rider (my #6). Iona has taken care of business in the conference thus far, aside from the loss at Siena, but I’ve commented on the Siena home court advantage in this conference. I think Iona’s under-rated at this point. The team won ballgames on the defensive side of the ball last year despite all of these players being offensive minded. Coach left for the Seton Hall job I believe, and now these players have dropped off a bit defensively, but the offense has been fantastic. The numbers don’t show it, but this is one of the few teams in America 1-8 on the roster that can both defend and score, and do it consistently. It’s the reason I had them pegged to win the conference. They got off to a rough start this year, but that’s expected with a new staff.  Like I said, they’ve improved their offense drastically, and that was the only concern coming into the year. As they get deeper into the season, the defense should come with it. As for Rider, their guards just don’t matchup. They were held under 60 points in both of last year’s meetings, and that was with Thompson on the team. Rider is in sort of the same boat as Iona. Haven’t really gotten any better defensively, but they have offensively. Robinson has filled in Thompson’s roll pretty well and they got some length which could disrupt Iona’s guards a bit. They’re 4-1 in the conference as well with the lone loss to Siena, but that was a home loss where Iona’s was a roady. Rider has played virtually nobody since the first week of December at Pitt. Their offensive #’s have been good, yes, but a big part of that is due to the current six game win streak against the following ranked defenses: 148, 284, 305, 327, 222, and 233. I think it’s fair to assume this will be their toughest matchup in the past month both offensively and defensively. This Iona team is molded almost identically to the past few years’ Siena teams who have made noise in the tournament. They saw success, and recruited in the exact fashion. If Siena can win here with a lesser defense/offense, why can’t Iona? Nice spot for Iona, but it’s not do or die. Their schedule the rest of the way is cake. Fairfield’s put together a nice string of 11 victories in a row against a bunch of nobodies aside from the win at Siena, a game in which a really below average offense shot 50%. Just to put that in perspective, they’ve shot below 31% in half of their road games and are averaging a whopping 34% from the floor if you throw out the Siena game. As for Loyola MD, they aren’t really anything special. They don’t really pose an inside threat to any team in the conference, and their best player for some unknown moronic reason doesn’t even start (Barney). He was in the doghouse last year and has been in and out of arguments with Patsos over the course of the past two years. It’s somewhat scary, and could be a black eye on the program. Patsos hates him so much that if he doesn’t need him, he won’t play him. Two games ago they built a big lead with Manhattan and Barney played ten minutes. He’s scored in double figures in four of the last five with limited minutes and that’s the only game he didn’t. He also hasn’t started a game in the last two weeks. He’s coming off a twenty-one point game and the teams coming off a waxing at Iona. Note to Patsos: YOUR BEST PLAYER NEEDS MORE MINUTES against Fairfield’s defense.  These two teams played to a 65-55 Fairfield victory early December. Loyola was coming off a snail physical St. Peter’s team just two days before and shot 32% and only lost by ten. On the flip side, Fairfield was obviously at home where they shot 48%. Duplicate that 48% and they get a win probably, but I mentioned those road woes. I have no interest in Marist games, they are flat out awful. Weird spot for Siena with a revenge game with Canisius on deck.

Great run!  How many units do you typically win each year in college hoops? Thanks.

    Nropp,

Your insight into these added teams is really a great read as those are the teams I'm most interested in and out of the public's eye. So I'm just another one here that wants to thank you for taking the time each day to share your work with us.

FYI, you have menioned a few times that you liked Siena better with Jackson and he is supposed to return today just in case you didn't see this for future use. .

    Neil,

tomorrow, I really like "the hall" getting maybe 11 or 12 @ Pitt. Reasons being that Pitt shot lights out at GT, a true sandwich game, and the hall getting healthy. Is my pt. spread close and do you agree with the logic? Keep up the great work! btw In addition to taking the 10 pts. and marymount, I got greedy and parlayed minny(ml) with Marymount(ml) for 9-1. Almost got lucky! Thx. again.

Very well done write up buddy! I agree with you, Iona and Rider is a tuff call, and at Rider #89 and Iona 94th Sag, should be a good game, but hard to bet on! Look forward to catching yor plays the next time! I had to tease Valpo +11, and Fairfield to +1. I couldnt pass up Butler and in a ML parlay also.!

I'd prolly guess closer to -18 for Pitt. I could be heavy, just think Seton Hall struggles immensely to score. I like the sandwich game, could come into play with the big line. You won't see me against Pitt all year, I think they're the real deal.
